The story concerns a remote, insubordinate young girl whose mother, Isabelle Granger, is about to send her to boarding school. Isabelle and Nathalie share the house with a calm, orderly girl and her mother. The two women are kept busy with chores—clearing a table, dredging the back-yard pond, burning piles of sticks, sewing, and ironing.
The intensely feminine ambience is disturbed by the intrusion of a hulking door-to-door washing-machine salesman who suffers, in the women’s blankly skeptical presence, a comical breakdown that is both existential and emotional.
Marguerite Duras, french famous writer and filmmaker too, capture serenity, beauty and the charm of simple things into her film where a young Gérard Depardieu appears in one of his earliest screen roles.
