Pour La Vie passionnée de Vincent Van Gogh, le réalisateur Vincente Minnelli a majoritairement tourné sur les lieux mêmes ou avait véçu le peintre Vincent Van Gogh quelque 80 ans plus tôt, en Hollande, en France et en Belgique.

Lorsque Vincente Minnelli, l'un des plus grands coloristes du cinéma, met en scène la vie du plus grand coloriste de l'histoire de la peinture, Vincent Van Gogh, il réalise une oeuvre syncrétique sur son travail autour de la couleur et de la peinture, et signe de surcroît son film préféré.
