Some of the greatest wonders of the ancient world still lie buried unseen and unexplored beneath our feet; near-legendary places that vanished thousands of years ago. This documentary series follow on a chain of archaeological and historical proofs and make an attempt to reveal the greatest secrets of the disappeared cities of the ancient world.
Some of these mysterious ruined cities were so vast and magnificent, that it must have been inconceivable to those who lived there in the past that they could ever completely disappear. Today it would be similar like Manhattan sinking under waves, or Paris being covered over with earth. But as this series shows, every civilization, however magnificent, must eventually die and become a lost world.
This 3 part series includes The Vanished Capital of the Pharoah, The Cursed Valley of the Pyramids and The Dark Lords of Hattusha. Through drama and CGI these lost wonders are rebuilt and restored to their original splendour.

A BBC, National Geographic Channel and ZDF Co-Production

Part 1: Vanished Capital of the Pharaoh
It was one of history's great disappearing acts. Pi-Ramesses, the magnificent capital city of Ramesses II, is described in ancient texts as the most awesome in Ancient Egypt. But the city was only discovered when scientists realised the course of the Nile had been dramatically altered in ancient times, leaving the city stranded in the desert.
This magnificent ancient capital was built 3,000 years ago by the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses the Great, but long ago the whole city disappeared. When it was rediscovered by early archaeologists, it opened up a bizarre puzzle - when Piramesse was finally found it was in the wrong place, somewhere Ramesses the Great could not possibly have built it.

Part 2: Cursed Valley of the Pyramids
The lost pyramid city of Tucume is the biggest single collection of pyramids in South America – 26 colossal structures built around a sacred mountain on the north coast of Peru. Until recent excavations, no-one knew why this extraordinary site had been built, who had lived here, or why it had been abandoned. Bloody scenes of human sacrifice took place at Tucume, culminating in a frenzy of bloodshed that led to the purging and abandonment of the city.
Long ago, the Lambeyeque people were haunted by a terrible fear and believed that building pyramids was essential to their survival. Their obsession reached its height at a city called Tucume, an eerie place of 26 pyramids standing side-by-side, the last pyramids this civilization created before they vanished forever.

Part 3: Dark Lords of Hattusha
From their capital, the Hittites ruled a mighty empire. But, two and a half thousand years ago, their civilisation disappeared and their capital city, Hattusha, was lost to history. Only the marvels of 20th century archaeology have led to its rediscovery.
It was one of the greatest vanishing acts in history. More than 3,000 years ago a mysterious and ruthless civilization rose from nothing, created a brutal and unstoppable army and built an empire that rivalled Egypt and Babylon. Yet, just as it was at the height of its powers, the great empire suddenly vanished from history.
