In a drifting small boat, two women and a man recalls their recent past. One of the woman escaped from the prison; the other one was desperate; and the man had lost his lover. They have no further strength or desire to live and have reached the limit of their existences.

The theme of Limite is stated in its title - the limits faced by man in the struggle for existence. The narrative concerns three shipwrecked people, two women and a man adrift in a small boat on the open sea. In a series of flashbacks, they reveal to each other their stories and what they were trying to escape when they took flight on the ship. The first woman (Olga Breno) escaped from prison with the help of her jailer but her life remained unhappy in the new town where she was trapped in a monotonous job as a seamstress. The second woman (Taciana Rey) was unhappily married to a drunken silent film pianist (Brutus Pedreira), who is shown accompanying Chaplin’s The Adventurer in the town’s small theatre. The man (Raul Schnoor) was a widower who had a love affair with a married woman. When he visited his wife’s grave, he encountered his lover’s husband (played by Peixoto himself) who told him that she had leprosy. The life boat in which they have taken refuge begins leaking…

Limite es un original film vanguardista brasileno; se trata de una obra enormemente influenciada por las vanguardias europeas, especialmente la francesa, aunque con evidentes inspiraciones cinematograficas de filmografias como la alemana y la rusa. Limite fue realizado durante la epoca de transicion entre el cine silente y el sonoro y estamos ante una obra que fascina al publico desde el mismo momento en que comienza. Tres personas se hayan, sin comida, en un bote a la deriva; cada uno de esos personajes tiene un particular pasado… asi de sencilla es la trama del film y aunque parezca simple no estamos ante una historia facil ciertamente… Y es que la maestria de Peixoto narrando y entrelazando las diferentes historias de los solitarios protagonistas del film es realmente destacable, sobre todo gracias a una compleja y soberbia narrativa cinematografica.

Limite e uma obra-prima e considerados por muitos, o melhor e mais belo filme do cinema brasileiro. Sua trama e muito simples, porem as imagens sao impressionantes, parecendo uma poetica exibicao de quadros em movimento devido ao seu enquadramento e angulos de camera inusitados. O ritmo e muito lento e algumas vezes o espectador pode se sentir cansado, mas vale a pena ver. A trilha sonora, com magnificas musicas de Borodin, Cesar Frank, Debussy, Prokofieff, Ravel, Satie e Strawinsky, adequa-se perfeitamente ao filme.
