Poggioli was, according to the scant information that I have been able to find, a great talent with long experience as editor and assistant to several great directors, and with a close relationship to Luchino Visconti. He died an untimely dead from asphyxiation in his appartment in 1945. Some sources speculate suicide, while other sources cite the incident as a freak accident.

Poggioli has always been very precise in filling out the background ambience, which brings into focus the articulation of social relations as well as the individual passions; exteriors (also in a geographic sense) and interiors (details of furniture and dress.) There breathes in his films an air of fullness and tactile sensuality that would be inherited by directors like Visconti and Lattuada. For this reason it should not be surprising that costume films like Addio giovinezza!, Gelosia or Il cappello da prete, accused of a capable but sterile side-stepping of dramatic current events (formalism as self-censorship), alternate with films set in the contemporary period which face the current world head-on, and where the atmosphere of the post-war world is already present (though few discerned it.) It's not a question of opposing an ante litteram neorealist Poggioli to those who accuse him of calligraphism. Instead it's true that, to locate the authentic Poggioli, one must go a bit beyond appearances, beyond the game of mise-en-scène, whether it be "realist" or "calligraphic", that he in any case knows how to orchestrate so well…
With Poggioli a certain tradition of quality, which the Italian cinema had aimed at as an optimal target, reaches its peak. In the post-war period it will find many imitators, and perhaps its epilogue in a certain passive taste for the reconstruction of ambiences that stretches from Bolognini to the teleromanzo. What has been lost is exactly the active ability of Poggioli to insert some doubts, an indefinable sense of discomfort, within the golden cage of his sets and costumes. How his subversive dreams would have been developed in the changed conditions of production in the post-war years, no one will ever know.
Poggioli completed only 11 films as director, of which La bisbetica domata falls somewhere in the middle. It is a modern rendition of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew with Amedeo Nazzari, and, especially Lilia Silvi, showing rare form as the protagonists.
