    Valerie Kaprisky plays an innocent girl who doesn't want to be innocent. Then again, sex is not her reward. There is an unexplained mom / daughter relationship that has its moments on screen, but overall fails to really explain the struggle between the two characters. The men that these two women share is a struggle in itself. Both characters want to be loved, then again, sometimes all it is is sex that drives them both.

    Valerie Kaprisky won instant stardom in 1983, when she bared body and soul as the French student who seduces and then betrays Richard Gere in Breathless. The actress, then 20, excited audiences with her perfect measurements, her sensuality and her sense of abandon. Although she has not been seen on our screens since, in France she has made several movies, including L'Annee des Meduses (Year of the Jellyfish), a 1984 movie now playing in Philadelphia and other American cities.

    In Meduses, directed by Christopher Frank, the sultry Kaprisky plays Chris, an adolescent who spends a summer vacation in St. Tropez, parading her wares for all to admire. Not only does she try to compete with her beautiful mother, but she seduces men right and left. The one who rejects her, a pimp, brings about a crisis that ends tragically.

    While some critics describe the film as little more than a voyeur's paradise, the actress, looking more fragile and less voluptuous than her screen self, sees it differently.

    "It's about the difficulty of a young girl to grow up," she says. "She fights it with all the means at her disposal. If this girl is aggressive and tough, it's because it's the only way she knows to protect herself. Some people have no problem keeping a distance - they give a little smile, and the other knows that's all there is to it. But she's either very generous and gives everything or very aggressive out of fear or confusion."

    Although seductive, Chris is no femme fatale. "This expression refers to a woman," the actress points out, "which is exactly what Chris doesn't want to become. She has a woman's body and a child's mind, and she separates between the two. She's ready to give her body, but she's ferociously protective of her mind. She's very destructive - she hurts people. . . . That's why she falls in love with a pimp, who treats people like dirt. She admires the ease with which he handles people."

    Behind her character's every look, every gesture, Kaprisky found a memory or meaning - which is why she has been so frustrated about the way her film was received by critics and audiences in Europe. "You work hard and give yourself to the role, you act, and people just remember the nudity. It pained me enormously.

    "In the past two years, I refused to show any skin in a movie. That's why I haven't worked in that period. I turned down everything."

    Not for everyone: one could almost dismiss it as a soft sexploitation movie from the eighties. But no. This is about an obsessive little girl who is turning into a woman. The characters around her are here to reflect the wicked light she is shining, and emphasize facets of her personality, as she is wrecking havoc around her.

    It is all then about the sexual desires of women and men. How they cheat. Whom they love. What it is that they want. What they would do to get it. Only one character is "not normal " in this movie, and this is the scary part: all the others could be us to some degree.

    One flaw in this movie: the voice-over on two occasions. Obviously the director could not find a way could convey the message. Pity. Otherwise, it would have a perfect little venomous movie.
