Deeply meditative and cooler than zero, the series follows the existential adventures of a goggle-clad hipster Kino along with talking motorcycle Hermes as they travel the world and learn much about themselves in the process. Imaginative, thought-provoking, and sometimes disturbing, Kino's journey is documented in an episodic style with an emphasis on atmosphere rather than action or plot, though still prevalent. This collection presents the series in its entirety for a total of 13 episodes.

Kino’s Journey is a really lovely little show. Subtitled “The Beautiful World,” this 13-episode anime lives up to the description. The series is based on a light novel series by Keiichi Sigsawa (he also wrote the light novels that were the basis for the Allison & Lillia anime series, recently licensed and released by Sentai Filmworks). The series is very episodic. There isn’t really a single set plot line. Kino and Hermes are simply traveling from place to place. There are a few things that tie the episodes together. Kino learns of things in some lands that she sees the effects of in other places, but otherwise the episodes are stand alone, with recurring themes. As a traveler, Kino spends no more than three days and two nights in any one place, claiming that it is the perfect amount of time to experience a place without staying too long to become attached. The beauty of the world lies not in conventional beauty, but rather in things that would be considered harsh, brutal, and tragic. The idea being that these things have a beauty as well, or perhaps, that they exemplify what beauty there is. Whether it’s a land where people don’t have to work but work anyway to measure their worth through stress, a land that collects books from all over the world but locks away anything they deem harmful, or two countries that keep their peace through disturbing methods. Though it’s clear that Kino herself doesn’t like violence, she is well armed with a revolver, a pistol, and several knives for her protection. She is an unusually excellent shot for one of her size and age, but she discovers she must find a balance between peace and justified violence. Is it worth killing innocent rabbits to save the lives of a few starving men (meaning, are the men worth the sacrifice)? Does an entire land need to be destroyed for the sake of another? Everything about this show falls wonderfully into place – the simple and beautiful animation, a lovely score, good writing, and an excellent English dub by ADV. It is well worth a watch. It’s a little gloomy, but in a very beautiful sort of way. It’s an exploration of life, people, and culture. As is often expressed in the series and the novel, “The world is not beautiful, therefore it is.”

With a unique look-and-feel, varied episode structure, and meaningful content, "Kino's Journey" is truly a must-see series. It's like nothing else out there in the way it presents such thought-provoking material in such a relatively simple format, making its message and ideas accessible and engaging even for viewers who wouldn't normally go for a "deep" anime. Ultimately, "Kino's Journey" is some of the best story telling you can find in any medium or genre; it entertains while also expanding our horizons and making us think about who and what we are, what we're doing here, and what it means to be human. Plainly put, “Kino’s Journey – The Beautiful World” is an intelligent, entertaining, not-to-be-missed series.

Ryutaro Nakamura's thirteen part animated television series Kino's Journey is both visually stunning and thematically inventive. It is surely one of the most appealing, engaging, and sensitively made programs I have ever encountered.
The series as a whole is not structured by one overarching narrative. Most episodes tell a single story, although some tell several related stories, and one story spans two episodes. Despite this lack of narrative cohesiveness, the visual beauty and reflective themes of Kino's Journey so unify the program that it emerges as a harmonious collection of lovely, often wistful, and always complementary meditations. All the program's various tales revolve around the travels of a young girl named Kino. Staying in a single place for no more than three days, she wanders from one country to the next riding a talking motorcycle named Hermes. In each of these lands she encounters individuals who either relate their own experiences or who involve Kino in their troubles.
I should, at this point, note that while the potential viewer may suspect that the inclusion of a sentient vehicle would guarantee that the series is absolutely ridiculous, the director somehow actually makes Hermes' presence as a character work. What is more, the series generally avoids giving answers to the questions it asks in the course of its various contemplations. The viewer is, as a consequence, often left affected by Kino's Journey in a way that he might not have expected. The subjects of these reflections vary considerably and are never narrowly dogmatic. In one episode, for example, humanity's foolish insistence upon believing the words of some prophet or another and the nasty consequences of such beliefs are emphasized. In another, the viewer is reminded of how people seem to refuse to allow themselves ever to be satisfied. In a third, the director even asks a number of interesting questions about good deeds. One of the program's most interesting elements is its initially ambiguous presentation of Kino's gender. While it is eventually revealed that the character is a girl, this is not, at first, obvious. Even knowing that Kino is a fictitious character, who, being animated, does not belong to either sex, the viewer is likely to discover himself uncertain about how he should relate to this individual. I was surprised myself to see how colored my perceptions of other people are by their gender. Even though Kino's gender is unreal, I had difficulty relating to her until I knew what it was supposed to be. When I was unable to categorize her, I felt a strange sense of uncertainty, a sort of tentativeness, like that I might feel when looking at something from a distance and not being able to discern exactly what it is. This awareness reminded me how rigid my own thoughts can be, how I can easily constrict my world according to set categories, and, by doing so, it helped me to move, at least briefly, outside of those categories. Moreover, the animation used in the program is consistently beautiful. The character designs are simple and fetching. Kino herself is agile, appealing, and very nicely realized. The backgrounds are generally created with austere but lovely watercolor paintings and are, perhaps, even more attractive than are the series' characters. Fortunately, each of these elements enhances the beauty of the other. The bright, vibrant skin tones of the characters' charmingly rendered faces contrast with the subdued colors of the backgrounds and these differences work well together. The program is an absolute delight visually.
Kino's Journey is, possibly, the most beautiful television series I have ever seen. While it never quite attains greatness, it is consistently engaging and realized with a real aesthetic sensitivity.
