    Jumanji is a visually elaborate fantasy about an enchanted board game that opens a magical portal to a jungle universe. Two young children, Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce), discover the game in an abandoned home and suddenly are greeted by Alan (Robin Williams), an adult who has spent his life trapped inside the game since playing it at age 12. Alan's only hope for freedom involves finishing the game, but this proves rather dangerous, as Judy, Peter, and Alan find themselves running for their lives from huge rhinoceroses, evil monkeys, vicious lions, and other terrifying jungle beasts. Director Joe Johnston, whose special-effects background previously came to good use in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, used groundbreaking computer imagery to simulate the thrills.

    "Jumanji" is a movie that wants to be an amusement park ride through a funhouse that's also a house of horrors.

    As a movie, it's far from compelling. As a thrill ride, though, it's a rampaging special effects and animatronics extravaganza that will make small children cringe behind their seats.

    Robin Williams and Bonnie Hunt star amid an ever-increasing barrage of creatures large and small. The film is based on the popular children's book by Chris Van Allsburg about a couple of kids who find an old, jungle-theme board game with magical powers. (Van Allsburg was one of several writers of the screenplay.) But the movie loses entirely the powerful, imagi nation-boosting enchantments of the book.

    "Jumanji's" magical powers are turned into cinematic weapons by director Joe Johnston, who made "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" a few years back. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially if audiences don't mind feeling as if they should be wearing seat belts in the theater.

    The film is exceptionally skillful in meeting its own aims, pushing the thrill ride to a nerve-jarring level and letting crazy action swirl and crash in a flood of high-decibel mayhem. The overblown style of the film, with its horror-movie gimmicks, will prove unnerving to small children, though violence per se is not a factor. Parents ought to consider keeping away children younger than 5.

    The title refers to a board game played with dice. But the moment play starts, it's clear that Jumanji is no ordinary Parker Bros.-style outing. The pieces move by themselves, and play is undertaken with the scary caveat that once a game is started, it must be finished.

    Robin Williams, as Alan Parrish, was prevented from finishing a game he started as a kid in 1969 in the New England town where he grew up. Williams' character found the old, dirt-encrusted game at a construction site. When he started to play it with a neighbor girl, she ran away in fright. Thus, his participation in "Jumanji" never ended, and he disappeared into the game until the present day, when orphan siblings Judy and Peter Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce) find it in Parrish's boyhood home and start to play.

    In the film, Sarah, the girl who was traumatized, rejoins the game; she is played as an adult by Hunt.

    Each time the dice are rolled, pieces move and a cryptic message is given to the players. After swarms of African bats and giant mosquitoes are let loose – as is a hungry, oversize lion – Williams pops up looking like a primitive jungle man. From his literal captivity in the game, where he presumably has survived 26 years of danger at each turn, he is able to help the younger players by giving advice and using his survival skills.

    Every roll of the dice brings new perils – and a chance for the film makers to unleash another part of their arsenal of tricks, which include a thundering stampede of wild animals, a garden of enormous man-eating plants, a flood, a crocodile and other threats to life and limb.

    The major characters in the film – those animals, the hungry plants – are animatronic or robotic creations. The fact that they don't quite look real adds to the movie's feeling of being an exotic, though somewhat grim, mechanical contraption.

    The lion, for example, with its slightly klutzy movement and plastic-looking hair, is more menacing than a real lion might have been, simply because it lacks the unmistakable majesty real lions possess.

    "Jumanji" is also a computer- driven special effects movie in extremis. Images are multiplied, in the style of the "Jurassic Park" herds, or put in odd contexts, as in a scene in which Williams seems to be sucked through the floor.

    "Jumanji" doesn't capture anything substantive about humanity and ignores some of the more heartening themes in the book about family and the sanctity of the home. In spite of its delightful, frequently beguiling cast (the film is worth seeing for Hunt's performance alone) the movie never develops an emotional stake other than those centered on the ability of the players to survive being gobbled up by an enormous mechanical monster of a movie.

    Strangely, the best thing about "Jumanji" is the physical curio- shop look of the old board game itself. It has a seductive, antique luster that somehow captures a whimsical, playful quality.
