Jeonju Digital Project 2005

A man wakes up in a small room. He doesn’t know where he is and has no memory what happened to him. What terrifies him more is that he is bleeding, accompanied by acute pain. The clearer his consciousness becomes, the tighter the room seems to get.

For more than twenty years I have been interested in using video. I believe it is a suitable tool to capture actors’ spontaneity so much so that it has inspired me to create ‘actor-driven stories’. As time goes on, the technology of the tool has advanced into a territory where digital video can provide the possibility of replacing film. My new short film, < Haze > was made based on that possibility. Through my career as a film maker, I have always chosen the theme that is synchronous to the times and society, so there were stories I had to abandon < Haze >. Digital video can make filmmaking so accessible and easy. What you have to do is just to grab the camera and start to shoot! “Do it before you think, and then the truth will become visible”. This is the message I think this tool has given to me. I believe this short film is the simplest and strongest in expressing the condition of the people and their struggle in the age of this modern era, which has been the principal concern to my filmmaking. Magician is a name of a band. The guitarist, Ja-eun, killed herself 3 years ago. Her boyfriend and the band’s drummer, Jae-sung reminisces about her every 31st of December. Jae-sung and their bassist Myung-soo wait for Ha-young, their vocalist in a desert forest in Kangwondo. It is snowing, the last night of December, and the time is quarter to midnight.

Members of an underground band, ‘Magician’, who disbanded after the death of a friend, are like magicians themselves. Through music, they spent their youth experiencing the world of magic. But now, they are just ordinary and lonely people who’ve lost their magical power, just as we don’t believe in a magical world. Today, they’re gathered at a bar in Kangwondo remembering their friend’s death, longing for the lost magic power, and silently wishing to gain it back once again. We hope that this film will give such a subtle moment for the audience. Abracadabra. (SONG Il-Gon)



A couple escapes their family to look for a spiritual tree in the jungle. There is a song at night that speaks about an innocent idea of love and a quest for happiness.

< Worldly Desires > is an experimental project where I invited a filmmaker friend, Pimpaka Towira, to shoot the love story by day and the song by night. The story, 「Deep Red Bloody Night」, was written by my assistant who wanted to reprise a forbidden love story in a more romantic past time. I picked a pop song, 「Will I be Lucky?」to convey a sense of guiltless freedom one feels when being hit by love. The video is a small simulation of manners, dedicated to the memories of filmmaking in the jungle during the years 2001~2005. (Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
