Jeonju Digital Project 2003

Like previous years, JIFF presents Jeonju Digital Project, where three directors are invited to come together at Jeonju. This year's participants are young film directors, Aoyama Shinji, Bahman Ghobadi, and Park Ki-Yong. Japan's director Aoyama Shinji has received worldwide acclaim by establishing his own cinematic traits beginning with his debut film. Iranian director Bahman Ghobadiha has made his entrance into the arena of world directors with his film . The Korean director, Park Ki-yong, recognized worldwide, has opened new possibilities in digital films through .



The main character Akihiko lives in an old apartment. He plays the guitar and sings his own pieces in the street, but his dream wasn’t meant to be like this. The owner of the apartment next-door constantly repeats Buddhist prayers night and day. On the floor above, there lives a strange middle-aged man who wants to be kicked out of the apartment. Such an ordinary day exists. Akihiko is standing still on the street at dawn.

The title < Like a Desperado under the Eaves > was inspired by a landscape in an American western film which shows a vagabond sleeping in a street under the rain. When I was asked to produce this film, I wanted to portray my father who has lived in Korea until the second grade in elementary school. Instead, I freely draw a picture of my lethargic self when I was in the mid-twenties, drinking and cursing at the world, and without a job. I also depict the stories that happened around me at the time. (Aoyama Shinji)



Kurdistan - a village near the border with Iraq. Faegh, a hawking player has three wives and 11 children. His occupation with his wives and children is to make musical instrument, called Daf. Daf is the most famous Iranian instrument with a special site among Kurds. They make this instrument from the sheepskin. The ceremonies for making such instruments take them to the city and sell to large stores for a little money. They live in absolute poverty. They are also very professional and skillful players who sometimes play for a very little money. For the prohibition of playing among women in Iran, the wives play people and train them nightly, how to play Daf. This Film is a combination of music and life and we enter into the life of this strange family. They play this instrument both on the day of new birth and on the day of funeral.



As a movie director and professor of Korea Academy of Film Arts, I agonized over what to make with a digital camera and how to make it when I was first asked to produce Digital Search for the Jeonju International Film Festival. In truth I had made a prior film in digital (and this is probably the reason why I was asked to make this piece). And since then, I found a story that I really wanted to make in digital. However, when I actually got the request, I came to think that making this story would be meaningless. The reason is that using digital techniques as a medium to produce this story would not be significantly different from my previous work. This time, I vaguely think that I should try to find something new. I am dominated by the obsession to find something new because it is digital. I can only go back to the essential question of what is the medium called digital. For the moment I got out on the streets with my digital camera and I snoop around. First I meet with a movie critic K to learn more about the aesthetics of digital technology. Then I earnestly begin to explore the digital world. First I explore Seoul, the setting of my everyday life, and then I explore people with my digital camera. I wish to catch another aspect of these people that I have not been able to see thus far. After I finish my first exploration with my digital camera, I go over my findings with a digital editing machine. I wonder what I will fine and how I will feel when I finish this personal digital exploration. (Park Ki-Yong).
