Asiago Plateau, after World War II: young Gianni returns to his hometown from the Russian campaign and sets out in search of a job.
After a first job in an illegal sawmill, and after his brother Francesco has left for Australia in search of work, Gianni meets one evening the old Du (the film is inspired by the person of the old Vu, Albino Celi from Valstagna) who in a state of drunkenness begins to blabber, telling him also how he earns his living, ie recovering the metal war remnants of the Great War in the mountains of the plateau and reselling them in order to earn money to survive. Despite the initial distrust, Gianni realizes that the old man has his reasons, which will allow him to earn some money to get married with his girlfriend. Later, Gianni decides to use his military severance pay to purchase a metal detector, which, still together with the old Du, allows him to find greater quantities of war material.
