A family re-unite to celebrate Christmas in this heart-warming piece of vintage British filmmaking.

Ralph Richardson plays Reverend Martin Gregory, a recently widowed minister who is reunited with his family one Christmas. He is torn between his roles of Clergyman and father, and the zeal he shows in attending to his parishioners leads him to neglect the needs of his own family, until emotions boil over one Christmas.

Adapted from the stage by director George More O'Ferrall, this is a charming and moving seasonal favourite, peaking with the family's poignant reconciliation as they re-discover the true spirit of Christmas.

The Holly and the Ivy (1952), a warm, nostalgic Yuletide drama, is based on a British play by Wynyard Browne and was adapted for the screen by Anatole de Grunwald, a Russian-born, British writer who also produced the film. It's about an extended family reuniting for Christmas at the home of a widowed country vicar (Ralph Richardson). Among the relatives are two comic aunts, a cynical son on leave from the army (Denholm Elliott), an anguished daughter from London (Margaret Leighton), and a generous daughter (Celia Johnson) who has remained home to care for Richardson over the years, but who really wants to get married. Basically, everyone is emotionally troubled in some way, and the vicar, caring as he is toward his parishioners, seems blind to his own family members' turmoil - until, of course, everyone's personal problems begin to emerge in a poignant scenario.

The cast is full of esteemed British actors, Ralph Richardson most prominent among them. One of England's great 20th-century stage actors, he'd recently been nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting turn in The Heiress (1949), and would be nominated again, posthumously, 35 years later for Greystoke (1984). In the interim, he appeared in such films as Richard III (1955), Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962) and Dr. Zhivago (1965), as well as countless works for the stage.

Celia Johnson, appearing here as Richardson's self-sacrificing daughter, did not make many movies - only a dozen in all. The bulk of her career was dominated by the theater. Still, she acted in several famous British films, including In Which We Serve (1942), This Happy Breed (1944), The Captain's Paradise (1953), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1959), and, in her most famous screen role by far, Brief Encounter (1945), for which she was Oscar®-nominated. Her role in The Holly and the Ivy, in fact, isn't very different from her character in Brief Encounter; in both films, she is in some way bound to one man but drawn to another. In private life, Johnson was married for decades to Peter Fleming, elder brother of James Bond novelist Ian Fleming.

The actresses playing Aunt Lydia and Aunt Bridget - Margaret Halstan and Maureen Delaney - originated their roles on stage. They are the only performers in the film to have been brought over from the play.

The Holly and the Ivy was not a significant commercial success upon its release, though The New York Times called it "literate and deftly played by the cast of fine performers." It was filmed by cinematographer Ted Scaife, who went on to shoot such visually stylish gems as Night of the Demon (aka Curse of the Demon, 1957), Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959), The Dirty Dozen (1967) and Play Dirty (1968).

Until a few years ago I had never heard of this little gem of British holiday sentiment. I was having a discussion of holiday films that most people don't usually see when I heard someone call it the "Christmas movie for people who don't like Christmas movies" and the quest to find it was on. I eventually tracked it down through Video Search of Miami, though its now on DVD elsewhere in the world, but not in the US which is real shame.

The Holly and the Ivy (1952) [Re-UP]

This is the story of a Christmas in which the emotionally wounded family of a Church of England clergyman come home and attempt to have a happy holiday. What happens is not your typical happy tearjerker, nor is it a Christmas nightmare. Basically everyone comes home to Ralph Richardson's home. Secrets are reveals and misunderstandings stated and somewhat cleared up. Best of all it's reasonably realistic, as much as films of the time could be in 75 minutes, for example the ending while hopeful is far from certain, so much so that I cursed the fact that it didn't go on another five or six hours, my sole complaint about the film.

This is a film to see and treasure not only during the Christmas season but all year long.

A word of warning, don't abandon the film until you get to the end. I wasn't enraptured of the film for almost two thirds of its running time. I was interested in what was happening but I didn't know if I liked it, and then suddenly, all of the pieces were in place and it became this charming atypical jewel of a movie.

Forget Its a Wonderful Life, watch this instead, its so much more real.
