Felix Bressart, later one of the most delightful members of the Ernst Lubitsch "stock company," plays the title character in the Austrian comedy Hirsekorn Greift Ein (Hirsekorn Does Something About It). It's a typical worm-turns affair, as a mild-mannered provincial actor ends up working as a chauffeur for a scatterbrained female novelist. Slapstick is the order of the day, except in the scenes involving heroine Charlotte Susa. Guiding the actors through their paces was Rudolf Bernauer, a stage actor-manager of vast experience. Critics in 1931 felt that Hirsekorn Greift Ein was too thin to be stretched to 90 minutes.

The new German-language comedy at the Hindenburg is "Hirsekorn Greift Ein" (HirseKorn Butts In). It is a combination of robust farce and gentle fun, wherein the leading characters are portrayed by the lovely Charlotte Susa and the humorous Felix Bressart.

It is a feature endowed with a great deal of originality, even though it descends occasionally to hardy comedy. Herr Bressart is first beheld as an actor in a caravan show. As Hirsekorn he is the driver for the picturesque wagon and its tender. Thea van Dieman, a novelist, acted by Fräulein Susa, encounters Hirsekorn and the other troupers on the roadway, and afterward she is among the audience when a performance is given.

What with the handicap of having only one pair of shoes between two male players and Hirsekorn having to cut out a shirtfront from a piece of glazed cardboard, the scenes of these roadshow players backstage and their rough and ready work during a performance are highly amusing.

The story is concerned with Thea, posing as a factory girl to obtain local color for a novel, and Hirsekorn, who, after disaster befalls the troupers, becomes Thea's chauffeur, pretending that he is a man of wealth and that his employer's car belongs to him. Thea falls in love with an electrical works foreman and Hirsekorn is smitten with a saucy stenographer. Both are found out, but Hirsekorn has added to his deception by telling wild stories about Thea. The period of anger on the part of the stenographer and the young electrician is followed, however, by a happy ending for all concerned.

This production is beautifully photographed and the acting of all deserves high praise. Fraulein Susa sings a song or two quite charmingly. Herr Bressart indulges his fancy for both light and low comedy, and his portrayal is invariably effective. Rolf von Goth measures up to the rôle of the electrician, and Truus van Alten is vivacious as the stenographer.

Rudolf Bernauer, director of this film, reveals a pleasing imaginative touch in the handling of his scenes, none of which is stereotyped. He has he happy faculty of giving movement and ingenious ideas to the production.

Although there are no English titles on the film, much of the humor can be appreciated after one scans the program synopsis.
