Yoichi Higashi Box 1 (1992-2000) [Re-UP]

Boxset contains three masterpieces of the video poet Yōichi Higashi. His 1992 The River With No Bridge ("Hashi no nai kawa") about the controversial issue of the Burakumin people received numerous awards in Japan. His film The Village of dreams ("E no naka no boku no mura") won him international acclaim: awarded in more than 20 film festivals among which the Silver Bear at the 1996 Berlin Film Festival, and the Grand Prix at the Ghent and Amiens Festivals, it was successfully released in many countries including France and the USA. The Crossing ("Boku no ojisan") is an engaging, discreetly philosophical but over-elusive pic that too often slips like sand through your fingers.





THE RIVER WITH NO BRIDGE begins in 1908 and tells the story of a widow, Fude HATANAKA and her two sons, Seitaro and Koji, who live in the small town of Komori, where Buraku people are forced to reside.

The two boys are continuously harassed by their teachers and classmates through their childhood as a result of their Buraku heritage.

In the midst of the 1918 Great Rice Riots in Osaka, Seitaro meets with Asako, the daughter of a rice shop owner, and falls in love with her. She too is of Buraku descent.

At the same period, Hideaki, an old friend of the brothers returns to Komori, and he along with Koji and the townspeople create "Zenkoku Suiheisha", the National Levelers Association, an organization pledged to build a bridge over the river of discrimination, making all people equal in every way.

Village of Dreams is based on the book of essays The Village of My Paintings, written by TASHIMA Seizo. He and his older brother TASHIMA Yukihiko are Identical twin brothers and award-winning picture book artists. They each have uniquely different styles, but share inspiration for their work in their childhood experiences in rural Japan.

Their drawings sweep us back to 1948, to a rustic hamlet in the countryside of Kochi. The twins are in third grade; they love to draw but are also known as infamous brats in the neighborhood for the pranks they play, and they encounter various shades of life in their everyday experiences.

HIGASHI Yochi and NAKAJIMA Takehiro adapted the story into a narratibe screenplay liberally. The script vividly captures the children's encounters with the many living creatures around them, natural and supernatural, filling the story with legend and imagination. The three old woman who appear in the film were inspired by the witches in Macbeth, but are portrayed uniquely as traditional Japanese figures. Emphasizing realism, great care was taken to ensure that all dialogue in the film observed the local dialect to slightest detail.

Winner of the Silver Bear at the 46th Berlin International Film Festival, Grand Prix at Gent Flanders International Film Festival, and many other awards, Village of Dreams became a world classic in 1996. The same production team brings a new film, The Crossing, about a teenager and his uncle who fight together to overcome their personal crises.

14-year-old Takuya lives in a rural town near mountains and rivers. His 29-year-old uncle Koji works as a graphic designer in urban Tokyo. Koji's father dies and Takuya is arrested for attempted robbery-the two young men must now face a crucial crossing in their lives.

The concluding chapter to director Higashi Yoichi's "boy and river" trilogy, the film highlights contemporary themes like family, adolescence, and the healing properties of nature. The wild but beautiful Kuma River stars as a threatening symbol for the boy's rite of passage. Supernatural beings reign in the mountains above the village.
