From the creators of Machine Girl, and Tokyo Gore Police, An alien-spawned, mysterious mist blankets the northern half of Japan, transforming those who inhale it into ravenous, flesh-eating zombies hellbent on devouring the surviving human populatin. Plunged into chaos, Japan is torn into 2 areas. The southern half of the country, where the population remains untouched by the deadly gas, lives behind a heavily-fortified wall, while the northern half is a lawless, zombie-infected wasteland.
IMDB
So, I just finished watching Helldriver and I’m not even sure what I could write to give this movie justice. The overall ridiculousness and insanity cannot easily be put into words that would begin to describe some of the characters, set pieces, and props used in this film, but let’s give it a shot anyway since you are going to want to see this film.
The plot is very simple and is in no way essential to the enjoyment of this film. The film follows a girl named Kika, who comes home one day to find her father being murdered and eaten by her mother and uncle. As the mother and uncle are about to murder Kika, a meteor falls from the sky, ripping a hole through Kika’s mother, then crashing and causing ash to fill the air. Once the ash is inhaled by a human, they grow an antenna-like growth from their forehead, and become a zombie.
The government walls off the northern section of Japan to keep the zombies secluded to that area. One day, the government decides to send in a group of people to try to kill the leader of the zombies. Yes, these zombies have a leader, and that leader is Rikka, Kika’s mother. So as you would expect, Kika is the leader of the group of people instructed to infiltrate the infected area.
What happens after Kika crosses into the infected area? You’re going to have to see for yourself because you might not believe me if I told you. It’s filled with alot of moments that make you say things like “Really?”, or “Get the hell out of here!”, and quite a few “Holy shit!” moments. In no way do I mean this in a derogatory way either.
There are quite a few things going on in this movie that made no sense to me at all, for instance all of the Nazi references, but I guess trying to make any sense out of this movie is a waste of time because trying to figure out why things exist, or looking for plot holes is pointless. After the first 10 minutes or so, you realize what you are in for and just settle back to be taken on Helldriver’s crazy ride.
You are going to watch this movie for its insanity, not because you are looking for a well crafted movie. You are going to watch this because you want to see things you haven’t seen before, and you want to see those things with buckets of blood being sprayed from severed arteries and decapitated heads. You want to see flying zombie heads attack a van full of people. You want to see the zombie car. You want to see the pregnant zombie woman use her still attached baby as a weapon. You want to see a bunch of…no, let me stop there. You want to see all of this stuff yourself without me spoiling it.
You want to see this insanity if you enjoyed films like Tokyo Gore Police or Machine Girl because Yoshihiro Nishimura directed this film, and once again he brings that splattery style to the screen. Nishimura also directed Tokyo Gore Police, Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl, and Mutant Girl Squad, so you have an idea of what you’re in for even before you watch this film. Now take into account Nishimura only had about $600,000 to work with and you can just imagine the kind of effects you’re going to see in this film. Nishimura has a way of making these terrible effects work for his films, and once again, that’s the case here. Even with the very small budget, this film contains THE most awesome weapon I have ever seen in a film. The chainsaw katana. Never have I wanted a weapon from a film as much as I’ve wanted this. Amazing.
So check out Helldriver when you get a chance. Watch it when you are tired of watching all those serious movies with tight story lines and twists and turns. Watch this when you want to kick back and turn your brain off for a couple hours. My rating for Helldriver is going to be 7.5 out of 10. I like it a little more than Tokyo Gore Police, but not as much as Machine Girl. However, it says alot about this film to be in the company of those two films.
