Modern-day Hollywood may have its fair share of talented stars, but this archive-rich film transports us to the bona fide Golden Age, when movies such as Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Rear Window brought international prestige to LA. It was the dawn of the cinema superstar, and by 1955 one name was on everyone’s lips: Grace Kelly.
With a career spanning just 11 years, Kelly went from bit-part player to Hollywood icon, starring in as many as 15 films and serving as a muse to one of the greatest directors of the time, Alfred Hitchcock.
Despite her eventual success, Grace Kelly’s unpromising beginnings included modelling for an insecticide commercial. Even her father had his doubts, saying of her sister Peggy, ‘I thought it would be Peggy whose name would be up in lights one day. Anything that Grace could do, Peggy could do better’. Even at the top of her game, Kelly was admired for her beauty, yet vilified for her promiscuity. Unpicking the hypocrisy of Hollywood, rumours flew as to the actor’s lovers, with JFK, Clark Gable and Marlon Brando among the names mentioned. But was she just another victim of the rampantsexism and misogyny that plagued the industry?
