Five inmates break out of a women's prison. Four of them are hardened convicts, but one is a girl who was convicted for a crime she didn't commit. As the authorities chase them down, the cons terrorize or kill anyone who gets in their way…

The film was written by AC Stephen and Ed D. Wood, Jr. and directed by AC Stephen and is noteworthy as this is Wood s last on screen appearance, playing dual cameo roles as both the gas station attendant Pops and the sheriff, wearing dark shades and a fake moustache. It s a simple storyline, where five women break out of prison trying to find money one of the girls buried before being sent way. 4 are hardened criminals, the 5th was unjustly convicted. Most of the film is spent with the girls traveling around California, encountering hippies, beating up men and ultimately fighting amongst themselves.

A friend gave me a copy of this movie (titled FUGITIVE GIRLS) for free, thinking it was some worthless piece of garbage. I watched it, and slowly began to realize it was an unknown classic. Written by the infamous Ed Wood and directed by A.C. Stephens of ORGY OF THE DEAD fame, this tale of wrongful inprisonment and jailbreak is great viewing for exploitation fans. It's filled with cheesy dialogue, cartoonish performances (including an Ed Wood cameo as a cop), and sex. The characters are a treat as well: the "five loose women" the title refers to are an unforgettable bunch of hell-raising ladies. The butch, the nice girl, the redneck, the token black girl, and the meanie. In my favorite scene, the group happens upon a caravan of hippies in the middle of the desert. Let's just say that our favorite leading ladies find a convenient way to ditch their prison uniforms.

Fugitive Girls (1974)

A quintet of female prisoners escapes from jail and take off into the desert and get involved in all kinds of trouble. They steal clothes from a bunch of dirty hippies, roll an unsuspecting motorist, battle some bikers, and rape a cripple’s wife while he watches helplessly. It all ends with a big fight at a gravel pit.

Fugitive Girls is really stupid and cheap but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it immensely. It was written by none other than the man himself, Ed Wood and features enough trademark Wood moments to make it a blast for his fans. There are the patented Ed Wood driving scenes where the film cuts from day to night and back to day again within the same scene. There’s the scene where the horny female criminals rape an unwilling man by the side of the road that’s almost exactly like the one found in Wood’s The Violent Years. And best of all, Wood himself co-stars in not one but TWO roles!

I also liked the fact that Wood and director A.C. Stephens employed the five women’s naked bodies to their fullest potential and used ANY excuse for them to take their clothes off, no matter how flimsy. (My favorite was when they had to strip off all of their clothes to check them for lice). The prison itself was freaking hilarious. The budget was so low that Stephens couldn’t afford to film the movie in an actual prison so he filmed it in a goddamn summer camp instead! Pure fucking genius! And come to think of it, this may be the only Women in Prison movie in which you never got to see one damn prison guard!
