Director Israel Luna shows audiences just how cut-throat show business can be in this bloody outrageous horror-comedy that satirizes the filmmaking industry. When the air-headed leading lady of a B-grade fright flick turns up brutally murdered during the film shoot, the motley members of the cast and crew find themselves at the heart of a real-life whodunit – and with so many competing egos on set, everyone's a suspect.

IMDB

In the film FRIGHT FLICK, a young buxom leading lady is mysteriously murdered during the filming of a film of the same name. The film being part of a planned trilogy of films, we join the very same crew two years later as they embark on what is the filming of the 3rd and final film in the series. During the filming, the production has its ups and downs, such as the new lead actress, who isn't exactly a great actress and all, and crew members who just don't show up. But soon the cast and crew find themselves in a fight to survive as someone has taken this movie business serious, as life begins to imitate art, so to speak.

Fright Flick (2011)

With his last film, Texas Director, Israel Luna scored an indie hit with the Exploitation/Revenge flick, TICKED-OFF TRANNIES WITH KNIVES. That film saw a group of riled-up trannies score revenge on a group of thugs who beat down a few of their friends. The film was highly over-the-top, but somewhat fun in it's escapades, and if anything, it showed that Luna is a filmmaker who is capable of using his limited resources to their fullest potential. With this, his next film, he returns with the semi satirical Slasher film, FRIGHT FLICK. Instead of just being another disposable slasher flick, FRIGHT FLICK is one that is a little aware of itself. The film's light splashes of comedy allow it to deliver a few subtle jabs at the genre that it is participating in. For instance, within seconds of the film's opening, we are treated to a woman showering, as the camera never hesitates to focus on her huge breasts - we also get more of those breast shots post shower. This particular girl is participating in a low budget slasher film called FRIGHT FLICK(yes, the movie is one of those, "movie within a movie" type of things).

Fright Flick (2011)

The girl in question is just plain awful when it comes to acting, and everyone involved with the film knows it, but for the sake of possible profit with the boobs and such, they keep her around. A short time later, the leading lady is mysteriously found murdered. Obviously, somehow the film finished it's production, as the film skips ahead 2 years later, and the same crew is back to film the third and final film in the trilogy. Many things happen during the production such as position changes when the Assistant Director doesn't show up(another self aware poke at low budget film making. Often times, people have to take on multiple roles, or take on a completely different role at the last minute). Another thing is that two of the crew members are planning a secret film project of their own. But they have chosen to keep it under wraps seeing as FRIGHT FLIGHT 3 is the subject of Mr. Laurent, the film's Director, basically stealing the plot idea of it's Producer Jenkins. The movie within a movie idea, continues as cleverly, Luna has someone obviously steal this secret script and begin to play out the murders written within it. As the film crew begins to die one by one as it is written in the unwritten script, mystery and fun mount as we watch the characters panic, all the while trying to figure out, just "whodunit?"

Fright Flick (2011)

I'll be honest with you and say that, when everyone else was raving about TICKED-OFF TRANNIES, personally I saw it as just an ok effort. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun film and all, but some of it was just too silly for me. However, I do not knock it success, as I do believe it earned and deserved it. Everyone on that crew seemed as if they had fun, and for me, it was great to see a Texas lensed indie film get such high praise. As for FRIGHT FLICK is is more up my alley, it's more my thing….a good o; slasher flick(and hey, its not a remake of anything!) Some of the plot, admittedly has been done before, but there are other plot points that are pretty clever. I really enjoyed that the plot involved the idea of the crew members' finished plot being stolen, and then an unknown killer acting out that very script. Israel Luna's budget may be low, but his storytelling is top level. The way in which the plot progresses is straight out of the '80s Just like with a Slasher film of the '80s, we have an unnamed killer killing everyone, in over-the-top fun fashion, and an extension of the film's fun is having to figure it all out, just how is doing this, and why. Hoping to enjoy FRIGHT FLICK more that I did TICKED-OFF TRANNIES WITH KNIVES, I got just what I asked for with the film. It's not a spectacular film by any means, but what it is, is a silly, fun and humorously self aware film that utilizes all things that are familiar when it comes to a good old fashion Slasher film. It's got gratuitous boobs, witty humor, and characters, whose names you are likely to forget, but overall it is effort that is quite enjoyable, based almost solely on it's "fun factor" alone.

Fright Flick (2011)

FRIGHT FLICK from Israel Luna, is a good example of how a great film can be made on a lower budget, you just have to be aware of how to do it right. Great story-telling, along with a dedicated cast and crew are what truly make this film work. FRIGHT FLICK is a film that keeps with the Slasher spirit, utilizing cool kills, as a well as a well crafted make this one solid, all the way up to it's well executed climax.
