Pablo is a 12-year old boy raised in a violent and unforgiving environment. Embarrassed by his family life, he retreats from his classmates, engaging them only through a dangerous game. The arrival of a new boy at school, from whom he learns a new definition of friendship, leads to the discovery of a family where communication and love prevail over domination and violence. The film poignantly parallels the lives of a caring father unable to connect with his willful son, and that of distant Pablo and his abusive father who is incapable of giving him the love he needs, replacing it with something far more sinister. Told through both the children's and adults' points of view, El Bola is a stirring story that lodges in the memory.

    El Bola (2000)

Twelve-years-old and small for his age, he's a hardened street kid who spends more time playing chicken on the local railway tracks than at home with his family. After new boy Alfredo (Pablo Galán) befriends him at school, though, Pellet discovers that there's more to life than the beatings his father regularly inflicts on him.

    El Bola (2000)

Grittily convincing, this first feature from director Achero Mañas won a string of prizes at the Goya Awards (the Spanish Oscars) and has been pulling in a great deal of acclaim at film festivals across Europe. It's not hard to see why, since this is a strikingly powerful movie, that blends the moving realism of Ken Loach's "Sweet Sixteen" with some deceptively simple storytelling.

    El Bola (2000)

Dealing with issues of domestic violence, "El Bola" teases a truly remarkable performance from its lead actor, twelve-year-old Juan José Ballesta, who plays this street urchin in equal parts tough and vulnerable. A fractured victim of more past traumas than Mañas actually lets us see, he's old beyond his years.

    El Bola (2000)

By capturing the fledgling machismo of these kids (pinching cigarettes, flicking through porn magazines, playing suicidal games on the train tracks), Mañas brings us right into the heart of this story's focus on masculinity and violence, mapping out the tragedy of El Bola's family situation with a precision that promises an inevitable ending.

    El Bola (2000)

Yet what's so assured about this debut feature is the way in which its writer-director is able to avoid the expected stereotypes of character and action. He instead offers an ending that's as understated as it is unexpected.
    El Bola (2000)

Great film. You'll recall classics like Truffaut's 400 BLOWS. There are scenes of such warmth and such brutal stillness, it made me want to reach into the screen and affect the course of these characters lives. A lot of assumptions I made about these characters were challenged along the way. It's rare that a film actually teaches you something about yourself. Phenomenal cast and director who deserved the Best Director and 5 Goya (Spanish Oscars) the film received. El Bola's abusive father was played to a perfect pitch by Manuel Moron as a cold, abusive father, turned sheepish when the outside world learns of his transgressions against his own son. You want to strangle him! Turns out it was a Spanish indie underdog that upset a lot of larger, bigger Spanish films. Like the other reviews say, be prepared to laugh, cry, and become infuriated. Definitely a film to check out and a director to watch!!!

    El Bola (2000)

    ––––––––––––––––––––

Very simple movie, but so powerful, the type of movie you won't find in the theater near you,a little hidden treasure. Excellent cast and performances. A lesson in life growing up, of friendship, despair and hope. You do not want the movie to end, to me its a sign of something special. I see the game they are playing on the train tracks as a dare, but also a death wish, even as children they are playing a game that are similar to their way of life, comes the newcomer who has a normal upbringing and find the game stupid and refused to play it,shows the difference between the children depicted in the story, one raised by loving parents, the others living their life with no structure, no love, having to fight their own battles.
