Exposed has been released under a variety of titles including The Depraved and Diary of a Rape, The film’s Swedish language title is Exponerad. Exposed was co-written and directed by Gustav Wiklund who would only go onto direct one more film Sängkamrater (Wide Open), which also stars Christina Lindberg. The screenplay for Exposed was co-written by Tony Forsberg who as a cinematographer has worked on a trio of films with director Mac Ahlberg, Flossie, Justine and Juliette and Bel Ami. The score for Exposed was co-written by Ralph Lundsten who also wrote the score for Thriller: A Cruel Picture.
The plot for Exposed is a coming of age tale about a young woman named Lena. The plot also features two suitors one who shows Lena the darker side of life, while the other suitor offers her the safer more mundane. The film opens with the magnificent naked flesh of Christina Lindberg on display as an unseen photography (who we later find out is named Helge), takes candid photos. This scene pops up throughout the film and the snap shot freeze frame technique is frequently used throughout the film. The plot is not told in the most conventional way as some events are only a figment of Lena’s imagination. Even the film’s conclusion leaves many things unresolved. In many this is in line with the film’s lead character Lena and her indecision throughout the film. Even though there are plenty of exploitative moments in the film. The story is not as perverse as the title and the trailers for the film suggests.
Without a doubt this film’s main attraction and reason why the story works is the casting of Christina Lindberg in the film’s lead role of Lena. Christina Lindberg is very good in roles like this one which require her to be innocent and sexually curious. Fans of Christina Lindberg will be happy to know that she spends plenty of screen time with little or no clothing at all. Her strongest scenes are with Heinz Hopf who she would work again with three years later, Thriller: A Cruel Picture. Performance wise Heinz Hopf plays a role that is very similar to the one that he would play in the film Thriller: A Cruel Picture. The film’s most memorable scene is a bondage scene where Helge who has just broken into Lena’s apartment retrains her arms and legs as she lays in bed. The weakest performance in the film is an actor named Björn Adelly who portrays Jan, one of the two suitors who are in love with Lena. Ultimately fans of Swedish erotica and Christina Lindberg should thoroughly enjoy Exposed!
Synapse Films presents Exposed in an anamorphic widescreen that preserves the film’s original aspect ratio. This transfer has been flagged for progressive playback. Colors are nicely saturated, black levels fare well, details looks sharp throughout and print damage is minimal and never distracting. Overall this is another strong transfer from Synapse Films.
This release comes with one audio option a Dolby Digital mono mix in Swedish and removable English subtitles have been included. The audio sounds clear, evenly balanced and there are no major audio defects.
Extras for this release include the film’s original theatrical trailer (1 minute 54 seconds), The U.S. trailer for the film (3 minutes 47 seconds), two songs sung by Christina Lindbergh titled ”Allt blir tyst igen” (Everything Goes Quiet Again) and “Du är min enda vän” (You are my Only Love) and a stills gallery (30 images) that plays like a featurette with music from the film playing in the background. The main extra included with this release is a seventeen minute featurette titled “Over-Exposed” which includes interviews with Christina Lindberg and director Gustav Wiklund (in Swedish with English subtitles). The bulk of comments come from Gustav Wiklund who discusses how Christina was chosen for the role, the real life event that loosely inspired the plot, the score for the film and a missed opportunity to work with Roger Corman. Some topics that Christina Lindberg discusses include working with Heinz Hopf and promoting Exposed at the Cannes film festival. There are also many stills of Christina Lindberg that appear in the featurette. Overall Synapse Films give Exposed a strong DVD release that is highlighted by the two music tracks sung by Christina Lindberg.
As erotica, Exposed is a reminder of a time when sex films really could cross over to the arthouse circuit. Loaded with kind of emotional ennui and passages of hushed silence typical of Ingmar Bergman, the film ambles along at a deliberate pace, with Wiklund encouraging the audience to involve themselves in the narrative instead of passively kicking back to enjoy some lighthearted sex antics. The director alternates between Lena's sexually charged fantasies and cold reality, and the finale leaves one with more questions than answers. The sex on display is artfully shot, with Lindberg naturally dominating the proceedings (moral watchdogs, calm down: she plays a teen, but Lindberg was actually 21 at the time of filming). Apart from being an exceptionally beautiful young woman, Lindberg also proves to be a capable actress in the role. She conveys the character's confusion and anguish with a series of telling looks and nuances, never overplaying in the process. The supporting cast is capable enough, especially Heinz Hopf as bad boy playboy Helge, but this is very much Lindberg's picture. Skin fans will be pleased to know that she has an ample quantity of nude scenes, and if the sex scenes are done in such a way as to emphasize alienation over hot and steamy 'action', they are still erotically charged.Excerpt from Eccentric Cinema's Review
