You will find a very unique performance at the Théâtre Equestre Zingaro as it combines talented performers with horses for a very unusual equestrian display that incorporates the human and horse together with expertly choreographed dance, music, and acrobatics.
A film by Bartabas, a co-production of Zingaro Theater, M.K.2 Video and La Sept/Arte, distributed by 21st Century Culture. Bartabas, maestro of his own Zingaro equestrian theater, calls his 60-minute video ''Eclipse'' after the 100-minute theater work that just ended a New York run under the auspices of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. For all its concentration on black-and-white themes, in costuming, horse coloring and racially mixed cast, this ''horse opera'' might just as aptly be called ''Black and White in Color.'' The stark and yet lush video beguiles with its palette of subsidiary hues. Luminous blues glow like halos around the lunar whites and inky blacks. Warm, burnished hues enter the picture in the light to dark browns of the performers' skin tones and the shiny chestnuts and golds of the horses' hides. The video puts the viewer in a seat at the edge of Zingaro's specially built arena, and the letterbox framing reinforces the ribbonlike momentum of the performing ring. Insistent Korean music (guttural Pansori singing) drives the whirlpool of movement as kimono-clad and bewigged men and women interact with the 26 horses. Fluid camera work captures equally well the daredevil riding and tumbling activities and the voluptuously postured, Kabuki-like dances. All of the show's mesmerizing highlights are captured: the prancing horse, pacing as if walking on eggs; the riderless steeds, tearing around the ring like tornados; the stoic Bartabas, with enormous billowing sleeves doubling as wings, turning his ride into a butterfly's flight. And finally, the unforgettable denouement, when the blue-black Zingaro rolls over and sits down like some oblivious puppy.
