During the attack on an Italian town by Russian forces, the Marquise of O., the daughter of the colonel in charge of the defence, is attacked by a group of Russian soldiers. A Russian Count comes to her rescue, and falls in love with her. While he is away, she discovers that she is pregnant, though she cannot explain how that happened. Her father repudiates her, and she has to reject the Count while trying to find out who the father of her child is.

Die Titelfigur, Tochter des Kommandanten, kann sich nach einer Vergewaltigung durch einen russischen Grafen auch angesichts ihrer Schwangerschaft an nichts erinnern. Die Eltern sind empört und verstoßen ihre Tochter. Die Marquise gibt nun eine Annonce auf, um den Vater ihres Kindes zu finden. Bald meldet sich der Graf, woraufhin die Marquise nach Hause zurückkehren kann. Schon bald wird die Hochzeit von den Eltern arrangiert. Als das Kind zur Welt kommt, schenkt der Graf dem Neugeborenen und der Marquise anlässlich der Taufe sein gesamtes Vermögen.

La marquise est une jeune veuve, mère de deux enfants, vivant chez ses parents dans une ville du nord de l'Italie depuis son veuvage. Une des guerres impliquant plusieurs puissances européennes conduit à la mise à sac par les troupes russes de la ville après sa reddition. Menacée par des soudards, la marquise est sauvée par un officier russe, comte de son état. Quelque temps plus tard, elle se découvre enceinte, alors qu'elle n'a connu aucune relation depuis la mort de son mari. Sa famille la rejette pour fuir le scandale, alors que le comte lui fait une cour pressante.
