Based on a novel by Alfred Andersch, Helmut Kautner's film tells the story of a young woman, Franziska (Ruth Leuwerik), who can no longer bear her mundane life in Germany, a marriage sunk in routine, and a harmless, lifeless love affair. She goes to Venice and makes new acquaintances, but these all fall into the same old pattern; among them is a former British officer and spy who uses her to get revenge on a Nazi. So Franziska takes flight again. The film tells the story of this flight from boredom and routine, analyses the stagnation of society, and as in era of Michelangelo Antonioni in Italy, it depicts melancholy landscapes of the soul.

Franziska Lukas lebt in Deutschland in bürgerlichem Milieu und empfindet ihre Ehe mit Herbert Lukas als äußerst langweilig. Auch eine Liebesaffäre zu einem anderen Mann ändert nur wenig an dem Zustand der Langeweile. Zwar fehlt es ihr an nichts, doch geht sie auf die 40 zu und möchte ihrem Leben noch eine andere Wendung geben. Das aktuelle Leben scheint ihr absehbar. Sie bricht aus und geht nach Venedig. Dort sucht sie sich Arbeit und beginnt in einem Hotel als Zimmermädchen zu arbeiten. Die Veränderung und neue Bekanntschaften lassen ihr Leben nun aufregender erscheinen. Erotische und kriminelle Abenteuer erwarten sie nun. Sie lernt einen ehemaligen britischen Offizier kennen, der sich an einem deutschen Nazi rächen will. Franziska muss erkennen, dass dieser Mann sie nur für seine Pläne benutzt. Als ihr dies klar wird, flieht sie auch aus dieser Lebenssituation.
