Thérèse Desqueyroux tries to kill her husband, Bernard, by poisoning him, but the attempt fails. To avoid a scandal that will ruin his name, Bernard gives false evidence which results in his wife’s acquittal. When Thérèse is returning to her home in Argelouse, she brings to mind the events that led to her present predicament. She recalls her happy adolescence with her friend, Anne, whose half-brother she ended up marrying. It was not to be a happy marriage, though. Bernard’s only preoccupations were his name and fortune, and these led him to break up Anne’s love affair with a Jewish man. When Bernard began taking medicine containing arsenic, Thérèse saw an opportunity for her to escape from her miserable existence, by killing the man she has grown to despise…

Having made about a dozen short films, director Georges Franju delivered his three classic features: La Tête contre les murs, Les Yeux sans visage and Thérèse Desqueyroux, the last of which had its premiere on the 21st September 1962. This moody black and white psychological drama is a grave and utterly compelling adaptation of a celebrated François Mauriac novel published in 1927. The film shows the slow descent and emotional incarceration of a woman who is driven to murder her husband to escape from her suffocating marriage. Thérèse Desqueyroux recalls Franju’s first masterpiece, Tête contre les murs. In both films, the main character rebels against a hypocritical society whose sole concern is to keep up appearances. Whilst François is confined to a mental hospital, Thérèse is forced to live in an isolated house in the middle of a forest.

    Therese / Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962) [Re-UP]

One impressive aspect of the film is Franju’s use of nature - the Landais landscape where the film was shot is genuinely breathtaking. The director has a distinctive visual approach, which is both poetic and unusual. The entire book is depicted in the film and its dramatic progress is scrupulously respected. Some of the dialogue is taken directly from the novel and even Maurice Jarre’s music remains faithful to Mauriac. However, Franju exchanges the writer’s mystical approach for one that has a more human dimension.

    Therese / Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962) [Re-UP]

In this lost treasure of French cinema we have a sublime cast. With her impassive mask of torment, Emmanuelle Riva gives a superlative performance as the eponymous Thérèse Desqueyroux. Unfortunately for her and her career, Riva was unable to survive some mediocre cinematographic ambitions. Besides this film, her best parts are in Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima, mon amour, Jean-Pierre Melville’s Léon Morin, Prêtre and Franju’s last important film, Thomas l’imposteur. She even transcended André Cayatte’s conventional art in Les Risques du métier.

    Therese / Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962) [Re-UP]

The great Philippe Noiret (La Vie de château, Alexandre le bienheureux, Le Vieux fusil), marvellous as ever, portrays Bernard Desqueyroux as a mean and authoritarian boor of a husband - a bourgeois eunuch. If Franju’s muse Edith Scob (Les Yeux sans visage, Judex) was an obvious choice, she is perfectly cast as Thérèse’s cousin, the too superficial and conformist Anne de la Trave. The Polish-born French actor Sami Frey (seen beside Brigitte Bardot in H.G. Clouzot’s La Vérité) plays an impeccable Jean Azevedo, the only human being who understands Thérèse and is able to communicate with her. The supporting cast includes several high-class actors such as Renée Devillers, Jacques Monod and Lucien Nat.

    Therese / Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962) [Re-UP]

As a study in menace and penance, Thérèse Desqueyroux is one of the most successful fusions of cinema and literature ever. Arguably Georges Franju’s most perfect film, it attracted an audience of 1.3 million and won Emmanuelle Riva the Volpi cup (for Best Actress) at the Venice film festival. The film is scheduled to be released on DVD in November 2012, coinciding with the release of Claude Miller’s remake starring Audrey Tautou.
    Therese / Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962) [Re-UP]

"Therèse Desqueyroux",based on a celebrated novel by François Mauriac (the writer wrote the screenplay of the film)strongly recalls Franju's first masterpiece "La Tete Contre Les Murs" .Both Thérèse and François rebel against a hypocrite society whose sole concern is to keep up appearances .François is confined to a mental hospital;Thérèse is forced to live in an isolated house ,in the middle of a forest the trees of which are like bars of a cage.Franju's use of the nature,of the trees ,of the leaves ,of the Landais landscape is really breath-taking.

    Therese / Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962) [Re-UP]

Nobody can understand Thérèse but her cousin's boyfriend (Samy Frey):the long conversation they have in the forest is the only moment in the whole movie when Thérèse COMMUNICATES with another human being. Her cousin,Anne (Edith Scob,Franju's favorite actress) is too superficial ,too conformist (even in her love affair) and finally too preoccupied with her own interests to be someone the heroine could rely on.After the young intellectual has left,Thérèse is definitively alone.

    Therese / Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962) [Re-UP]

Emmanuelle Riva is one of the ten (maybe five) greatest French actresses of all time.As Roger Boussinot wrote: "Unfortunately for her and her career, she 's that kind of artist who cannot survive mediocre cinematographic ambitions".Her best parts were, besides "Therese Desqueyroux" , "Hiroshima Mon Amour' ,"Kapo" and "Leon Morin Prêtre"and "Thomas l'Imposteur" ,another Franju movie ,actually his last important work .She even transcended Cayatte 's conventional art in "Les Risques Du Métier" .

Philippe Noiret ,playing opposite her, portrays her husband with talent: a man so mean,so spineless ,so sexless he is almost frightening.A bourgeois eunuch.
