Set in an isolated, snow-covered town in the far West, this story has a renegade army officer named Jack Bruhn (Burl Ives) and his henchmen riding into the town threatening their worst to the men and women there. Blaise Starrett (Robert Ryan) decides to agree to Bruhn's demands for someone knowledgeable to lead them away from the law and the town, to safety. Mortally wounded himself, Bruhn opts to take Starrett up on his offer in one last act of generosity toward the townspeople, sparing them the mayhem threatened by his men.

    IMDB 7.4/10 from 1446 users

    Director: André De Toth
Writer: Lee E. Wells (novel), Philip Yordan (screenplay)
Actors: Robert Ryan, Burl Ives, Tina Louise, Alan Marshal
    Rated: N/A
    Runtime: 92 min

In my opinion the information on imdb.com and allmovie.com gives a somewhat stunted appreciation of De Toth’s final Western. Day of the Outlaw (1959) is a masterpiece of the genre, trapping its characters both physically and emotionally in their situations through assured staging and quietly confident direction. It is the use of landscape however, through Harlan’s photography of the snow and trails leading out into the mountains, where the movie is lifted from simply a fine example of mise-en-scene. It is as if the director has taken the celebration of the freedom the West had to offer, so often captured by Ford, Hawks, Daves and Mann, and created the anti-thesis in a noir-like pot-boiler, masterfully underplaying the close atmosphere while subtly examining traditional Western values and impressions of honour. Seemingly never-ending wilderness becomes a prison for a town caught on the brink of a range war, De Toth turning the West’s freedom into its boundaries, delighting in the several ‘false starts’ to the narrative, with storylines appearing and disappearing with the mounting tension as Burl Ives and his band of renegade troops roll into the saloon. Apparently De Toth had to fight to shoot this movie in black and white and it pays off. Aside from adopting a similar approach to colour as William Wellman in Track of the Cat (1954) I’m not sure how the vision created could have been as effective and this attitude to setting also shows in two of the earlier revisionist Westerns which undoubtedly drew from Day of the Outlaw, namely Il Grande Silenzio/The Great Silence (Sergio Corbucci, 1968) and Altman’s McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971). Overall this is a movie not only of interest to Western buffs, but also to fans of auteur cinema in Post-War Hollywood, De Toth’s style here reaching it’s peak, achieving beauty and meaning without shedding (indeed, developing) the economic, spare approach of his earlier Ramrod (1947).

    Extras:
    1. English commentary by Andre de Toth & Patrick Francis
    2. Interview - Andre de Toth & Patrick Francis: (in English with French subtitles)
    3. Un Western Dreyerien - Bertrand Tavernier (in French without subtitles)
