The diabolical thriller Shallow Grave was the first film from director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter John Hodge (the smashing team behind Trainspotting). In it, three self-involved Edinburgh roommates—played by Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, and Ewan McGregor, in his first starring role—take in a brooding boarder, and when he dies of an overdose, leaving a suitcase full of money, the trio embark on a series of very bad decisions, with extraordinarily grim consequences for all. Macabre but with a streak of offbeat humor, this stylistically influential tale of guilt and derangement is a full-throttle bit of Hitchcockian nastiness.
Danny Boyle has come a long way in his rather lengthy filmmaking career. He gained a cult-like following with fan favorites "Trainspotting" and "28 Days Later," "Slumdog Millionaire" won him an Oscar, and "127 Hours" was pretty outstanding but was perhaps blown up more than it should have been. It was a film called “Sunshine,” a personal favorite, about a team of astronauts sent on a mission to re-ignite the sun that really made this critic keep a keen eye on everything Boyle put his fingers on. Before all of that though, Danny Boyle made his debut as a director with a little thriller called "Shallow Grave."
Three flatmates, Juliet (Kerry Fox), David (Christopher Eccleston), and Alex (Ewan McGregor in his first starring role), try to find a tenant for the empty room in their flat. The trio takes great pride in terrorizing potential candidates during interviews by asking embarrassing questions or coming up with outlandish scenarios for the stranger on the other side of the room to pretend to put themselves in. They eventually settle on a writer named Hugo (Keith Allen) solely because he seems interesting. After he moves in, his dead body is discovered in his room along with a suitcase full of money. Instead of informing the authorities, Juliet, David, and Alex decide to keep the money for themselves. Unfortunately for them, they don't foresee the consequences that come with keeping tainted money.
The first thing you'll notice is that Juliet, David, and Alex are some of the most mean-spirited individuals around. They're totally self-centered and have some of the harshest things you could ever think of come out of their mouths. It's like every character in "Closer" took an apprenticeship with these three flatmates. The cinematography is really marvelous. Every kill stands out in some way or another whether you're looking out the little monitor of an ATM, are in the bloodied water of the bathtub as a man's face is shoved into it, or are on the inside of a freezer looking out as a poor man is locked inside it. The spiral staircase to the flat alone seems to make scenes all on its own. Then there's the opening, those rotating shots of David's head, and all of the overhead shots. Boyle's talent was apparent right from the start.
The movie itself is kind of unusual as it tends to jump back and forth between dark humor and terrifying moments of violence at the drop of a hat. Alex always has some smart comment to say that usually lightens the mood, but things begin to go down a different path once they dispose of the body. The mood changes, characters become paranoid or delusional, and the three friends are suddenly at each other's throats. That's the charm of "Shallow Ground" though as it never feels out of place or boring, but it does come off as a little peculiar.
"Shallow Grave" is a story that goes from bad to worse to nasty during its duration. The performances are solid as you can never get a clear read on anyone's motives right until it's about to be revealed and the cinematography is top notch as there's always something going on whether it's a dynamic camera angle or an all around beautiful shot. The storyline isn't the most original, but it manages to keep you guessing and enthralled the entire time. It's easily one of the most solid debuts anyone in Hollywood could ask for.
