Before carving out a niche as one of the most distinct voices in nineties American cinema, Allison Anders made her debut, alongside codirectors and fellow UCLA film school students Kurt Voss and Dean Lent, with 1987’s Border Radio. A low-key, semi-improvised postpunk diary that took four years to complete, Border Radio features legendary rocker Chris D., of the Flesh Eaters, as a singer/songwriter who has stolen loot from a club and gone missing, leaving his wife (Luanna Anders), a no-nonsense rock journalist, to track him down with the help of his friends (John Doe of the band X; Chris Shearer). With its sprawling Southern Californian and Mexican landscapes, captured in evocative 16mm black and white, Border Radio is a singular, DIY memento of the indie film explosion in America.
I just saw this movie for the first time tonight, and I loved it. It is beautifully shot with some great performances. It's funny, dark, and real. The music is great. As for the film being a "historical document," it does encapsulate part of the L.A. music scene in the '80s, but the movie is actually pretty timeless and still stands up today without ever seeming like a caricature of the times. This is one of the finest low-budget indie films I have seen. It really doesn't even need to be qualified that way. It is just an enjoyable film that works. Chris D.'s performance is especially poignant and Luanna Anders is perfect. If you love L.A., punk, or just a good story, see this film.IMDB Reviewer
Co-directors and co-writers Allison Anders, Dean Lent and Kurt Voss were UCLA film student graduates, who create this off-the-wall crime/caper road flick involving struggling rockers in Los Angeles. Anders went on to direct such films as Mi Vida Loca and Gas Food Lodging. Her sister Luana Anders stars as the wife of the missing rocker. The low-budget underground-like film was shot in black-and-white, and is filled with background punk rock music of the era.
Bands like The Flesheaters, Los Lobos, The Lazy Cowgirls, Green on Red, Slash, the Divine Horsemen, and The Blasters can be heard in the background. It's Andy Warhol west, humorously and amiably capturing the aimless lifestyle of punk rockers, dopers, hangers-on and idlers. It might serve as an historical document, because as quick as the punk rock era emerged was how quickly it vanished from the spotlight of the American rock scene. It's shot like a semi-documentary, has a witty low-key humor and is observant of the underground rock scene.
LA rock band leader Jeff Bailey (Chris D, of the L.A. punk band The Flesheaters, now a respected film programmer and historian) splits for his familiar digs in his trailer in Ensenada, Mexico, after called out for robbing the safe of a local club owner of a thousand dollars and some Quaaludes and is being pursued by the stingy owner's three thugs. Jeff was just trying to get the money owed him, but the self-absorbed rocker doesn't contact his worried wife Lu ( Luana Anders) and seven year old daughter Devon (the real-life daughter of Allison Anders).
The gist of the film follows Jeff's ditsy wife's attempt to track the irresponsible rocker down, her sexual involvement with hubby's two-faced roadie (Chris Shearer), improv interviews with a chatty groupie (Iris Berry) and Lu asking help from her hubby's bickering former band members Dean (John Doe, of the L.A. punkers, X) and Dave (Dave Alvin, of the 1980s rockabilly band, The Blasters). It copied in its documentary-like interviews Michael Apted’s 28 Up, by using the same 'to-camera question and answer interviews.'
Border Radio is an unpretentious, grungy and rambling amateurish film, that gives off good vibes, is filled with colorful characters and gives one a true feel for the LA underground rock scene without overstaying its welcome with such a slight and uninvolving story.Dennis Schwartz: "Ozus' World Movie Reviews"
