In 1944, during the height of World War II, the Japanese army launched "Operation Ichigō" in Henan Province. The Nationalist forces suffered a massive collapse, leading to the full occupation of Henan by Japanese forces. In response, the Chinese Communist Party decided to establish a new base in the region and dispatched the Lunan Independent Brigade from the Eighth Route Army’s Jilu-Yu Military District to carry out harassment operations against the enemy.

Brigade Commander Chen Tianfang and Deputy Commander Lu Lan were tasked with a strategic redeployment, while Lü Chong led the elite Canglang Assault Team along with the 3rd Battalion of the 3rd Regiment to provide cover.

During their mission, the Canglang unit infiltrated the key Japanese-controlled city of Xin’an, where they successfully sabotaged an ammunition depot. Meanwhile, Chen Tianfang orchestrated a covert operation to assassinate Gao Jiwu, a Japanese spy working against Chinese forces.

In the climactic battles that followed, the Canglang team and the 3rd Battalion fought alongside the main brigade forces and ultimately achieved a major victory over the Japanese troops, accomplishing their strategic objectives and helping to secure a foothold for resistance in Henan.
