The 25-year-old Orson Welles innovatively directs, writes and stars in Citizen Kane, begrudgingly giving co-writer Herman J. Mankiewicz some credit when he threatened to sue otherwise. The film comes after Welles received notoriety from his hoax CBS radio broadcast on Halloween Eve, Sunday, October 30, 1938, that scared the American public into believing the Martians landed in the States. Welles was able to get full control in making the film the way he wanted to. CK was noted for so many innovative features that are now regularly part of a modern film, that the film itself can still be presented to film schools as 'a film on how to make a film.' The innovations include such things as stylistic camera movement, unconventional lighting–including chiaroscuro and a novel use of shadows, following in the tradition of German Expressionists, depth-focus and angle shots, over-lapping dialogue, flashbacks, non-linear narrative, frequent use of dissolves, long takes and many other marvelous technical feats. The narrative is like a soap-opera detective story, of finding the missing piece to a jig-saw puzzle. Upon Charles Foster Kane's (Orson Welles) death in Xanadu, the most expensive monument ever built to honor one man, located in Florida, the editor of a NY newspaper, Mr. Rawlston, sends out his team of reporters to find the significance of the elderly Kane's dying last word: "Rosebud." Ace reporter Jerry Thompson begins by interviewing Kane's singer second wife Susan Alexander, his stuffy banker guardian Walter Parks Thatcher, his newspaper's general manager and most loyal employee Mr. Bernstein (Everett Sloane), and his best friend ever since their college days, Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten), who was the first one hired when Kane bought the crumbling NY Daily Inquirer and made him a drama critic. Leland now lives in a Manhattan nursing home and tells how he got canned (receiving a check for $25,000) after being too drunk to write a derogatory review of wife number two's opera debut–but it was dutifully finished by Kane in the same critical manner intended. In flashback, we learn of Kane's impulsive marriage upon his tour of Europe collecting art works, to the niece of a president, Emily Monroe Norton, and how she left him after his affair with Susan Alexander became public knowledge by corrupt politician James W. Gettys in a bid to stop Kane from defeating him in the race for Governor of New York. Emily and their son died two years later in a traffic accident. Kane lost because of the affair, but married the low-bred Alexander and was so overbearing that she walked out on him despite his claim of building Xanadu for her. Through flashbacks, we learn of Kane's childhood at eight and how his Colorado uneducated and unrefined mother Mary, who by luck inherited a fortune. Against her crude husband's advice, Mary thought it best that Charles be raised by respectable banker guardian Thatcher back east. In the final act, the Xanadu butler Raymond can only tell the reporter he heard his master say "Rosebud" before dying and breaking a glass ball of snow, but doesn't think it has any significance. In the end, the reporters fail to uncover what the mystery word means, but indicate it doesn't really matter because no one word can describe a person's life.
Though I find that I admire Welles' Touch of Evil more than any other film he made, this film is a masterpiece that has a certain continual fascination despite its dazzling technical achievements that encourages repeated viewings and always seems to bring out something seen in a different light or something brand new. It's an enigmatic film that invites comparisons to Orson's own character, and one that invites further questioning about such things as art, authorship, fakery and filmmaking. Fading in on an ominous nighttime exterior, the camera slowly focuses on a high wrought-iron fence filigreed with the initial "K." Beyond spreads Xanadu, the vast estate of one of the world's wealthiest men. The camera surveys the grounds–empty gondolas swaying on a private lake, exotic animals penned in a private zoo, manicured lawns and shubbery–all shrouded in fog. Towering above the mist is the top of a man-made mountain on which sits a castle, a single light shining from it. Within is a dying man who clutches a crystal ball enclosing a winter scene and make-believe snow. After several projects came to naught, notably an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, 25 year-old wunderkind Welles, already a sensation in the theater and radio worlds, made what is unquestionably the most stunning debut in the history of film. KANE is a landmark film for myriad reasons, not the least of which is the variety of techniques employed–quick cuts, imaginative dissolves, even the iris device once popular in silent films. Indeed, none of the filmmaking methodology of the past is left unused, but KANE also contributes an array of innovative cinematic devices, most notably Gregg Toland's astonishing deep-focus photography (a technique pioneered by legendary cinematographer James Wong Howe). Welles took credit for writing most of KANE's superb screenplay, but the bulk of its incisive, witty, and unforgettable scenes and dialogue were most probably scripted by screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, brother of Joseph, the noted film producer-director-writer. Nonetheless, Welles's contribution as director-producer remains awe-inspiring: he chronicles Kane's life through a combination of highly dramatic episodes and newsreel-like footage–slices of life that form a compelling patchwork biography. At the film's conclusion, reporters gather at Kane's estate, moving through a warehouse that is being cleared of endless piles of curios, stacks of furniture and countless crates containing Kane's purchases. As they move off into the dark recesses, a high boom shot reveals a staggering collection of toys, paintings and statues. Slowly the camera pans the heaps of Kane's possessions until it comes to a blazing furnace into which workmen throw all items considered to be junk. One of the workers picks up a sled–the very one Kane had as a boy in Colorado–and throws it into the fire. The camera closes in tightly on the top of the sled, and as it catches fire, the name "Rosebud" is revealed before the letters burn away. The scene shifts to the outside of the looming castle, panning upward to the high chimney from which Kane's lost youth curls upward into the night sky. The camera pulls back from the edifice, concluding the film with the shot of the iron fence with which it began.
CITIZEN KANE has influenced countless filmmakers and established the taste of discerning audiences worldwide. It is the epitome of filmmaking, a masterpiece for which Welles, one of the greatest practitioners of the cinematic art, will be forever remembered.

Special Features:
- Commentaries by Roger Ebert and Peter Bogdanovich. There was some concern when the first press releases about the Ulimate Collectors Edition of Citizen Kane came out and the Ebert commentary wasn't included, but the good news is, it's here. Both of these commentaries are quite good, though Bogdanovich's can come off as a bit too self-congratulatory at times, given his long personal relationship with Welles. To be fair, though, Bogdanovich does impart an incredible amount of background information as well as technical detail. Ebert's commentary is more nuts and bolts, giving some great background, especially with regard to Toland's contributions.
- The Opening: World Premiere of Citizen Kane (SD; 1:08) is a brief snippet of a newsreel of the New York premiere at the Palace Theater on May 1, 1941.
- Interviews (SD; 8:44) with Ruth Warrick and Robert Wise are very interesting, part of the Turner Archival Project and coming from 1997 and 1994 respectively.
- Production (SD; 15:01) is subdivided into Storyboards, Call Sheets and Still Photography (with Commentary by Roger Ebert).
- Post Production (SD; 5:12) is subdivided into Deleted Scenes (no actual footage, just stills), Ad Campaign, Press Book and Opening Night.
