Dec, 7th 1941 Japan launches attacks across the Pacific region, killing thousands in Pearl Harbor and capturing Singapore – a vicious and bloody battle ensues that raged across oceans, remote islands and jungles. This episode covers the early part of the war in the Pacific, one of the most bitter battle arenas of World War II. Pearl Harbor led America into the greatest conflict ever recorded.
Part 2: Purgatory
"Purgatory" looks at the extraordinary fate of Australian nurses evacuated from Singapore and America's retaliation at Midway. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, Japanese forces swept across the Pacific. Thousands of Americans and Filipinos died on the Bataan Death March and prisoners were forced to labour. This episode covers the plight of those who fell into Japanse hands during WWII. Over 100,000 prisoners of war endured appalling conditions in camps whilst nurses were raped and murdered.
Part 3: Armageddon
In "Armageddon," viewers witness death and survival in Japanese prison camps and the horror experienced by women who fell in the path of soldiers. In a war conducted far from the sight of the Geneva convention thousands of soldiers were captured, tortured and killed, both on the battlefields and in prison camps. This part investigates how propaganda fuelled hatred. In cinemas, the Allies showed films Japanese survivors being machine-gunned in lifeboats. The Japanese scoured prison camps to find prisoners fit enough to act in films.
Part 4: Apocalypse
The final episode, "Apocalypse," reviews the last merciless battles, the bomb that changed the world and, for some, the most difficult journey of all, going home. As the Allies neared Japan, the fighting got more savage. Tiny islands like Iwo Jima were carpeted with corpses. The Americans slaughtered wounded Japanese. Both sides looted and mutilated the dead. As Japan weakened, her resistance grew - some committed suicide; with supplies dwindling others turned to cannibalism. But it all ended when the atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima.
