The incredible histories within the stone walls of over 40 castles in four European countries: Germany, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain. Myths and legends are also explored, from ghosts and monsters to inexplicable noises and claims of treasure; to unimaginable tortures, murders, and deaths for love.
For centuries, European fortresses have been silent witnesses to the continent's history. Great events were staged in castles. Castles have also served as a backdrop for whatever inspires imagination: mysteries, legends and romances have been constantly brewing in these fortresses. Some for the reason of religious or military matters, others due to love, family and jealous affairs. From the prison halls of Lincoln Castle in Britain, to Braganca Castle in Portugal where D. Leonor stabbed her unfaithful husband.
This is a journey through several European countries in search of the keys that have made their castles guardians of History. Join us as we travel to the many British, German, Spanish & Portuguese cities decorated with astonishing medieval castles to see how the different cultures left traces of their presence in these mysterious constructions

Part 1: United Kingdom
Castles are notable geographic features of the United Kingdom, with their storied legacies.. To many, medieval castles are the essence of Britain's fascinating past. Immersed in history and centuries old, each one tells a story of Kings, Queens and feuding lords; war and bloody conflict; treason, revenge and murder. Delve into the history of some very well-known fortresses, and other less famous ones, all with their astonishing legends, dark mysteries and extraordinary secrets. This first episode is a tour around the history and the legends of 10 spectacular castles in England, Wales and Scotland. Fortifications featured include Bodiam, Bamburgh, Fraser, Beaumaris, Caerphilly, Lincoln, Conwy, Fyvie, Kidwelly and Glamis Castle.
Part 2: Germany
Germany is a land of monumental castles, great palaces and defensive constructions whose walls and legends are still intact today. Stories featured include the alleged madness of the Duke of Bavaria in Neuschwanstein, the escapes of Allied prisoners in Colditz, and the supposed death of the Archbishop Hatto by thousands of rats in the Mouse Tower. This episode takes us to the walls of Neuschwanstein, Heidelberg, Lichtenstein, Burghausen, Reichenstein, Drachenburg, Kriebstein, Colditz, Mauseturm and the so-called Frankenstein Castle. Filmed in 4K, the episode includes historical recreations that bring us closer to the people of the time, as well as 3D reconstructions, aerial images and contributions from historians and experts.
Part 3: Spain
Spain has a variety of castles purposefully designed for the city and region in which they are located. The country is a mosaic of regions that are fiercely proud of their unique and individual history. Most of Spain's castles date back to medieval times, and have had many influences in both their architecture and their role within the local area. The Muslim presence in Spain over several centuries made many of its castles quite unique in many ways. Spanish monarchs took advantage of the architectural knowledge of the Arabs who settled on the peninsula to build impregnable defensive jewels. Since the Middle Ages, over 20,000 castles have been built, where palace intrigues, military crusades, love dramas and family successions became legend.
Part 4: Portugal
Portugal is scattered with castles and forts from the very north of the country to the Algarve in the south. The region was fought over for long periods of its history, by Romans, Visigoths, Moors, Christians and then later by Spanish and French invaders. Castles were built throughout the ages to protect strategic towns and cities. Many of Portugal's castles are closely related to the Order of the Temple and to independence from the Muslim and Spanish kingdoms. The fortresses reveal an Arab influence dating back centuries combined with the Templar presence and Portuguese flair that made these constructions seemingly impregnable.
