The Director of THE MARINE, John Bonito is back with CARJACKED, the kidnapping thriller starring Maria Bello and Stephen Dorff. CARJACKED has the simple setup here, a singer mother who is locked in a heated custody battle. She's struggling to get by, pinching pennies in order to raise her son alone. Take this and add in the bank robber who carjacks and kidnaps she and her son, and what you have is a typical road thriller. Yes while watching this one, all sorts of similarities to other films popped into my head. Film's like COHEN AND TATE, and yes the obvious one, THE HITCHER(old or new, doesn't matter.). With this is mind, yes, CARJACKED is a film that has many predictable scenes and scenarios, but to it's credit, the film turns out to be a fairly decent effort, mostly due to its execution and the acting primarily from it's two stars.

    Carjacked (2011)

The overall look of the film is slick, however, I couldn't help but to think of how it felt much more like a TV movie. The film really seems to drag a little during its first half, while building upon its characters, and it doesn't truly reach its peak until the final act. It is here that the film builds up a real level of genuine suspense. But for the rest of it, things are kept rather enjoyable, but tame. There are times here that it seems as those the film could've been far more violent, but just wasn't for whatever reason.

    Carjacked (2011)

But as I said, CARJACKED remains enjoyable for what it is, and as mentioned, one of the main attributes it has is its acting. I enjoyed the acting here, perhaps mostly in part due to my liking of the two stars, Bello and Dorff. Maria Bello is believable and realistic as struggling mother, and then later as a "toughie" once she comes out of her shell. And on the other side we have Dorff as an emotionally aware killer. Dorff's "Roy" is a calm and collected guy, who seemingly even has morals, but when he is pressed, a real nasty, vile side of him shows its head. Dorff is good at managing his character's many changing characteristics through out the film, but is even better when Roy's personality is out from behind the proverbial curtain, so to speak. Both of these leads manage to keep things interesting over the course of the film, seamlessly playing off of one another. Aside from the "Lorraine and "Roy" characters, the film also puts Connor Hill's, "Chad" in the mix. I'm aware that with Chad, we are also supposed to sympathize with him, in addition to Lorraine. But to be honest, I never felt that a connection is ever made with Chad, so in that sense, it fails, however, since the character is so much a non-factor, this really had. no outcome in how the film turned out.

To sum it up. CARJACKED is simple in just about every aspect, yet it is still a moderately enjoyable thriller when all things are considered.
    Carjacked (2011)

Right from the time I read the title my expectations were low considering the length and the long term action ,or lack of, that can come from an eighty minute carjacking. The good part was that it was much more of a kidnapping of mother & son than any carjacking style. The film relied highly on it's actors considering there was only three people involved most of the time, Maria Bello was in her usual form, tough and gritty, doing whatever it took to get her & her young son to safety. Stephen Dorff's character as the "car jacker" worked well with Bello's, good enough to burn up 80 minutes of screen time and keep the viewer interested for the better part the film. I recommend it as a decent time killer, the acting is very good, and I didn't once check on the run time (something I do a lot when a film starts to drag).
