In 2009 in the small hamlet of Herxheim in southern Germany, an international team of archaeologists excavating a 7000-year-old mass grave of up to 1000 Stone Age people came to the startling conclusion that the site was not a Neolithic graveyard, as previously assumed, but a killing field where hundreds met a grisly fate. Herxheim is a window into one of the most violent periods of human history.
