French Jesuit missionary Father Laforgue travels to the magnificently austere Canadian wilderness to save the souls of a "savage and godless" people – the native tribes of the Huron and Algonquin. But the natives, who have their own spiritual value system that differs drastically from Christianity, are immediately suspicious, resentful and openly hostile toward the intrusive "Black Robe". And when Laforgue fires a reluctant group of Algonquin to escort him on a harrowing 1500-mile journey up the broad and sinuous St. Lawrence River, a devastating chain of events not only causes him to question his deeply held beliefs…but also forever changes the course of history for the natives' way of life.

    Black Robe (1991)

Noted Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford ("Driving Miss Daisy"/"Tender Mercies"/"Don's Party") passionately directs this somber story of the difficult task of the French Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century to convert the Indians. The Jesuits travelled 1500 miles north of Quebec to give a tribe of Hurons their religion. It's a demanding film filled with complexities and meant for the discriminating viewer. Its power is doing what the popular Hollywood glossy Dances With The Wolves couldn't do to tell us about the Indian traditions without bouts of sentimentality. Brian Moore adapts his own novel, fictionalizing many true stories on the subject of Christian conversion schemes for the Indians.

    Black Robe (1991)

In 1634, in Quebec, a young bored adventurous Indian-speaking carpenter and aspiring priest Daniel (Aden Young) volunteers to go with the idealistic well-born Frenchman black robe Jesuit priest Laforgue (Lothaire Bluteau) on a rough canoe trip to the distant and remote disease-stricken Huron village with a group of Algonquin Indians to try and convert the savages to Christianity so they can go to heaven. It's a 'heart of darkness' journey, filled with brutal honesty in showing the ways of the Indian. The assistant soon takes an Indian girlfriend (Sandrine Holt), while the shocked priest can't accept their promiscuity, savage ways and their illogical thought process.

    Black Robe (1991)

It becomes apparent that the Indians have their own religious beliefs about the afterlife and believe that dreams are more real than life, therefore they reject the Jesuit concept of a paradise for the deceased and choose to live only in the moment, to kill their enemies and share everything they have with their tribe (which is a true Christian belief that few Western Christians practice). Because the black robe doesn't have sex with a woman, he's looked upon as a devil and is targeted to be killed. But when Chomina (August Schellenberg) has a dream of a black raven swooping down upon him and going away alone, the Indians decide to desert the black robe on an island. This will lead to tragic results when the Algonquins return for him and are captured, killed and tortured by their fierce rivals–the Iroquois. A few escape to the Huron missionary site, where we're told they accepted Christianity because they were led to believe by the former missionary priest that the baptism holy water could cure the epidemic sweeping through the village. Fifteen years after their conversion, they are killed off by the Iroquois.

    Black Robe (1991)

The film exposes the Jesuits as naive into thinking they can convert the Indians without an understanding of their ways. An anguished Father Laforgue now became a doubter in the conversion effort but not in his beliefs. Instead of giving up this folly, Laforgue became a martyr and stayed to the end. Both the Indian culture and the Jesuit beliefs are fairly represented in this stark clash of cultures film that transports the viewer into a fascinating primitive world.

It was filmed in Canada, and offered spectacular eye-popping vistas.

    Black Robe (1991)

This is a savage but beautiful story set in Quebec in 1634 which focuses on the attempts of a priest to convert indian tribes to Christianity. Father Laforgue (Lothaire Bluteau) is a Jesuit priest on a mission to convert the Huron tribe. He travels with some members of another tribe, one of whom, Daniel, is his interpreter. During their journey Laforgue introduces to them the technique of writing while they accuse him of being a demon. Moreover, he becomes increasingly disturbed by the tribe's attitude to sexuality…

    Black Robe (1991)

Based on Brian Moore's novel - he also wrote the screenplay - Beresford's film is a successful attempt to portray the gap between Western and non-Western mentalities and world-views. The director abstains from examining in detail the norms of the Indian tribes and he concentrates on evoking the physical environment that surrounds them. By concentrating on the "outsider" Laforgue, Beresford focuses on his inability to penetrate into the codes and rules of the tribes, rather than making the Indians hostile to any newcomer. Their hostility reflects only the disrespect the priest has for their beliefs and culture. Blutheau captures superbly the growing isolation of the priest and his complete sense of alienation, while the harmony between the tribe's life and the landscape is evoked through the meticulous photography which captures the wild nature in all its splendour.
