Banged Up Abroad – Series 2 (2007)

This series tells the true stories that would be any travelers worst nightmare – when a holiday in paradise becomes a journey into hell that ends up in prison abroad.

Through graphic dramatic reconstruction, each film tells the story of someone whos been arrested and thrown into a foreign prison. It could be for smuggling drugs, falling foul of local corrupt policemen or for being duped into carrying illegal goods through customs. In all cases, the films follow the sinking sense of horror from the build up to the moment of arrest, their journey through an incomprehensible legal process, the coming to terms with the details of life in a hellhole jail, and the devastating fall out with their family and friends.

Episode 1 – Venezuela
Drama-documentary series telling the gripping real-life stories of young travellers in Venezuela who find themselves incarcerated overseas. This programme tells the cautionary tale of Leicester teenagers Jim and Paul, who ended up in a Venezuelan prison for smuggling drugs. They spent four and a half years in a living nightmare before seizing the opportunity to escape.

Episode 2 – Peru
Profiling two young women from Los Angeles who agreed to smuggle cocaine, in return for an all-expenses paid holiday. However, they were caught at the airport and sentenced to 10 years in Peru’s Chorrillos Prison.

Episode 3 – Nepal
Whilst traveling the world, Piers Hernu is persuaded by a fellow traveller to smuggle gold from Hong Kong to Nepal. But the Piers and his friends are set up and end up being arrested and sentenced to four years in a Nepalese jail. Only Piers’ uncle seems able to help them and after 8 months, he secures his nephew’s release.

Episode 4 – Columbia
American Glenn Heggstad is taken hostage by the ELN whilst traveling through Colombia on his motorbike. He suffers weeks of mental and physical torture before convincing his captors that he is dying of prostate cancer, resulting in them releasing him to the Red Cross.
