Remote tribes and exotic islanders have been made known to the world through the lens of anthropology. But beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, some of these people have begun to object. Required viewing for most introductory anthropology courses, this film profiles Margaret Mead's Papua New Guinea and looks at anthropology from the other side. Narrated by Ruby Dee for the public television series NOVA.

This documentary is an investigation of the relativity of cultures and the methodology of traditional Western anthropology, as exemplified by Margaret Mead’s work in Papua New Guinea's Manus Island. A visit to Manus Island reveals some surprising biases in Mead's work, the lessons of which are explored by both Western and native anthropologists.

Remote tribes and exotic islanders have been made known to the world through the lens of anthropology. But in recent years, some of these people have begun to object. NOVA travels to Papua New Guinea and looks at anthropology from the other side. Margaret Mead's research is challenged by former subjects and fellow anthropologists.

Margaret Mead was an American cultural anthropologist who featured frequently as an author and speaker in the mass media during the 1960s and 1970s. She earned her bachelor's degree at Barnard College in New York City and her MA and PhD degrees from Columbia University. Mead served as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1975.

Mead was a communicator of anthropology in modern American and Western culture and was often controversial as an academic. Her reports detailing the attitudes towards sex in South Pacific and Southeast Asian traditional cultures influenced the 1960's sexual revolution. She was a proponent of broadening sexual conventions within the context of Western cultural traditions.
