A Sufi tale (1980) aka Un conte soufi - Gayle Thomas
From the renowned National Film Board of Canada, this film is a fine example of engraving used as an animation technique, A Sufi Tale (1980), is animated in striking black and white images. Based on an ancient Persian teaching parable, the inhabitants of a village learn to overcome their fear of the unknown. The benefit of their new-found knowledge is demonstrated. The black-and-white images are reminiscent of German wood-cuts and are starkly beautiful.

Paradise (1984) aka Paradis - Ishu Patel
This vibrantly colourful animated short exhibits Ishu Patel's love of vivid colour, part of his Indian heritage. Within the crystal chambers of a glittering palace, a magnificent bird performs for its Emperor–its plumage a blaze of color. A blackbird, watching enviously, strives to acquire what he so desperately covets, only to discover that a golden cage cannot vie with the open skies.

The use of innovative mixed-media techniques–cutouts, color pencil renderings on cels and paper, multiple exposures, and backlit perforated backgrounds–combine with human imagination to produce this visually stunning animation short.

Karaluch Blatta Orientalis (1987) aka The Cockroach - Zdzislaw Kudla
A stunning but little known Polish animation which suggests a bizarre, but intriguing method of dealing with atomic bombs!

Pozar aka Fire (1976) - Witold Giersz
Renowned polish animator Witold Giersz pioneers the stunning oil paint on glass technique (later refined by Alexander Petrov) in his impressionistic work depicting the life of a forest filled with animals, where a fire breaks out.

First – an idyllic image of living in the woods, then – anxiety, smoke, animals’ escape, fire, smoulder, rain, thunder storm, ashes and eventually – rebirth of new life. The oil paint animation under the camera, makes painting alive in stunning depth and colour.

Oczekiwanie aka Awaiting (1962) - Witold Giersz
A man waits for a woman in a cafe. Idly he fashions two figures out of the paper napkins on the table. The figures come to life! Their behavior mirrors the thoughts of a man who expects a woman.

Witold Giersz displays his animation virtuosity in this comic-tragic tale by animating the napkins at the scale of real life and using the actual objects on the table as props.

The classic plot of Harlequin and his beloved is performed by the animated puppets. The film is in dramatic and romantic black-and-white, the only colourful touch appears in the form of a red rose.

Delightful plot an animation make this a real treat.
