This raunchy, screwball comedy directed with madcap zest by John Landis offers a relentless spoof of 1960s college life by following the hilarious adventures of the Delta fraternity. There’s nothing this motley collection of students won’t do to get the best of Dean Wormer, who secretly conspires to revoke Delta’s charter.
IMDB
Beer barrels shatter windows, rock'n'roll blares out, havoc rules in this sharp, college-campus-of-'62 crack at American Graffiti. An unashamed sense of its own fantasy is coupled with classically mounted slapstick; nostalgia mixes with cynicism in seductive proportions; and John Belushi's central performance as brain-damaged slob-cum-Thief of Baghdad is wonderful.
Seven years of college down the drain indeed. The king of all college comedies has made it into various versions of dvd, but this latest edition is the one to own. The movie is beautifully remastered in all its toga wearing 5.1 surround glory. A fitting tribute to a film that puts most movies in this field to shame. Nay, it is the king of the college spoof, not even newer films like Old School can come this close. It’s a timeless classic that is as funny today as it was when it was released way back in 1978.
I think that what makes this movie really click is the characters and casting. If you went to college, you can identify with a lot of the typical archtypes that can be found in on campus, it’s almost universal everywhere. This is the film that thrust John Belushi into the limelight. It is probably his greatest role in film aside from The Blues Brothers, his talent as a physical comedian is unmatched by anyone today. Its all in the eyebrows.
There will definitely never be another John. His Bluto character is the best one in here, even though he doesn’t get as much screen time. When one thinks of Animal House, you immediately think of Bluto. He isn’t even a central character in here and he manages to steal the focus of the film, thats how much of an impact he had. The most oft quoted lines come from the man himself.”Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!” Bless him for giving the slob a place in this world.
Its a classic good versus evil film, well that’s a stretch I know. The evil is personified by the nasty Dean Vernon Wormer (John Vernon) and his cronies. They just can’t stand a good time can they? Wormer has a major chip on his shoulder and put them on “double secret probation.” Whatever that means. He too has some memorable lines, the one that sticks out the most is “Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son.” Wormer has been giving school deans a bad rap ever since then.
To go along with this great comedy, Universal included a bunch of extras that are worth watching. There are a lot of interviews with the cast members, a reunion of sorts. They also tried making this where are they now segment based on the characters. Not sure if it was meant to be cheesey, but it is. Kinda dumb actually. The more interesting is the documentary and cast interviews. Instead of a commentary track, they added an option like in POP UP Video’s that show facts on screen as the movie is playing. One thing that disturbed me is Universal now forcing you to watch trailers for other dvd products, with no way of skipping to the menu. I sat through three ads and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Poor choice Universal! But, overall it still is a great package to own.
