Macunaima is a black native from the forests of Brazil in this satirical comedy. When he bathes in a magic stream, he is turned into a white man. He goes into town and becomes the lover of a female revolutionary. She is killed by her own time bomb and her good-luck charm is found by an Italian.
The man becomes a millionaire. Macunaima goes to visit the lucky man and almost ends up on the menu. He returns to the jungle where he is abandoned by his followers and family for lying about food. The once-fortunate man sits alone as he tells his story to the only creature who will listen, a parrot.

After the huge critical and box-office acclaim of the allegoric, iconoclast political satire "Macunaima" (1969), director Joaquim Pedro de Andrade raised funds in Brazil and Italy (through RAI-TV) to make "Os Inconfidentes", a politically and artistically ambitious (though low budget) film that tries to reassess historically the most important political event in colonial Brazil – the ill-fated plotting of a coup d'etat by a group of Brazilian military officers, poets and intellectuals aiming to overthrow the Portuguese Crown and establish a Brazilian Independent Republic in 1789, inspired by the success of the U.S. independence.
The conspiracy failed due to multiple factors, perhaps most importantly the lack of proper organization, funds and articulation with multiple segments of society. Once the coup plans were discovered, some of the conspirators ("inconfidentes") were imprisoned and tortured, and one of them committed suicide in jail. Most of them were exiled, but one was sentenced to death: the young dentist and low-rank military officer Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier, aka "Tiradentes", was chosen as the scapegoat. In 1792, he was hanged, beheaded, his body torn apart by four horses (one for each arm and leg) pulling out in different directions, and his head publicly displayed as cautionary warning for future tentative conspirators. One century later, Tiradentes became Brazil's highest martyr and hero, of course, when Independence was finally declared in 1889.
Andrade re-stages (with liberties) the actual events in some of the historical locations (the beautifully preserved villages of Ouro Preto and Mariana and their amazing 18th century architecture), aiming at a contemporary political meaning: in 1972 Brazil was living the darkest years of its violent military regime (1964-1985), with arbitrary imprisonment, torture and/or assassination of hundreds of political activists, not unlike what had happened in 1789. But Andrade wisely avoids naive revolutionary propaganda – "Os Inconfidentes" is rather an alert against hurried, hot-headed, improvisational actions by small activist groups who, though speaking in the name of the "oppressed majority", are perhaps guided by class or political esprit de corps, or utopian, unrealistic ideals (Glauber Rocha had already called attention to these issues in his 1967 "Terra em Transe"). "Os Inconfidentes" is also about the role of artists and intellectuals in the political status quo of a nation, especially in the fight against the then widespread military regimes in Latin America.

Marking Joaquim Pedro de Andrade's first feature film, The Priest and the Girl hews closer to naturalism than modernism in its stark and muted Emile Zola-like tale of a young priest (Paulo Jose) who has been summoned to a small rural village in Minas Gerais in order to dispense extreme unction for the town's terminally ill priest and assume his parish. A transgression is suggested in the dying priest's utterance of a young woman's name, Mariana (Helena Ignez), the ward of a middle-aged man named Fortunato (Mario Lago), and immediately, the young priest is implicated in guarding the secrets of the insular town. But Mariana's station proves to be even more ambiguous.
As intriguingly enigmatic as she is frustratingly willful, her seductive beauty and libertine outlook has proved to be a powerful intoxication for the men in the village, including her own benefactor, who has begun to look towards his ward as if she were his wife, and now implores the young priest to consecrate their already consummated union (a marriage that had once been forbidden by the priest's predecessor), and a suitor named Vitorino (Fauzi Arap) who watches his beloved from an unobstructed view of a nearby cottage. Drawn towards Mariana in the awkward silence of their mutual isolation and a profound sense of despair over his own surfacing emotions, the priest struggles with his desire to turn away from the harsh gaze of the claustrophobic village and consequently, his own flagging spiritual calling.
Unfolding as a free verse adaptation of sorts on the themes inspired by the poetry of modernist writer, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, the aesthetically atypical The Priest and the Girl, nevertheless, provides a insightful framework into de Andrade's recurring expositions on cultural ingraining, the affectation of landscape, and the elusive nature of desire.

Sexual fantasies among middle-class Brazilians are the material out of which this black comedy has been formed. The adventures of three people are followed to a (usually) humorous or dire conclusion. In the first story, a lawyer who misuses his position for erotic gain finds one client even more determined than himself. The second story tells of a neurotic lad who cannot bring himself to remove his coat and glasses for his erotic encounters, but he is sufficiently chivalrous to leave an aged old prostitute grateful for his attentions. The last story tells a mysterious, symbolic tale of a married couple whose feuding ends in death.

De Andrade’s final feature was arguably his greatest. The Brazilwood Man is a bemused, sexy, and positively ecstatic take on the life, work, and ideas of Oswald de Andrade, author of two cornerstones of Brazilian modernism, the 1924 “Manifesto of Brazilwood Poetry” and the 1928 “Anthropophagic Manifesto” or “Cannibalist Manifesto” (did somebody say Breton?). In a sense, this is de Andrade’s second homage to his namesake: the protagonist of Macunaima, in contrast to that of the original novel, was partly modeled on Oswald. Echoing the dual nature of that character, who is born as a fully grown adult and is transformed from black to white, The Brazilwood Man gives us a double Oswald: a man and a cross-dressed woman appear together on screen, simultaneously playing the writer. In the end, the female Oswald, inspired by the manifesto’s call for a revolutionary cannibalistic matriarchy, eats her male counterpart - just as Macunaima, back in the jungle after his loss-filled journey, is devoured by a pond nymph.

Born in 1932, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade died in 1988 in Rio de Janeiro, his hometown and birthplace. Writing about the Cinema Novo generation, French critic Sylvie Pierre was quite possibly right when she called him “the greatest of them all.”
