In Genoa, Agata runs her bookstore and, without meaning to, causes light bulbs and appliances to burn out. At the same time that a younger man declares his attraction to her, her brother Gustav, a morose architect, a distant husband, and an indifferent father, discovers that he was adopted and has a half-brother in the Po Valley. To Agata's great pain, she sees her young man with another woman - plus, Gustav cuts himself off from her and from his wife and son. Agata goes to the Po Valley, meets Gustav's brother and the brother's wife, and tries to reconnect by letting life wash over her. Wisdom comes from traditional Chinese medicine and from good literature.
Silvio Soldini has created another masterpiece, perhaps not quite as good as 'Pane e Tulipani', and yet perhaps it is even better. The movie has an ethereal quality, Fellini without the black edges. Licia Maglietta is wonderful, she expresses feelings with a little twist of her face better than anyone, she is a delight to watch. The attitude of the characters to infidelity, which pervades all their lives, is classic Italian… something that the Anglo Saxon / American mind can't understand. The characters are reminiscent of the three men in Sandra Nettelbeck's 'Bella Martha' who all manage to live their lives without killing anyone or even revealing a nasty sinister inner-self, a refreshing change and perhaps not totally divorced from reality. This is a movie for those with romance in their soul, it challenges us to dream and shows us the power of belief, it is very funny, thoroughly entertaining and leaves you with warm glow. Ten out of ten!
