The film tells the story of bootlegger Marco who announces he's going legit with the end of Prohibition. His
fortune declines because the beer he makes tastes terrible and everyone is afraid to tell him so. Nearly
bankrupt four years later, he has problems in his marriage because his wife has grown used to a high standard
of living. With bank officers preparing to foreclose on the brewery, he retreats to his Saratoga summer home,
only to find four dead mobsters who meant to ambush him, but died in a crossfire. More and more problems begin
to pop up in the life of the former bootlegger, as he's taken in a bratty orphan, and his daughter comes home
with a boyfriend that turns out to be a state cop.

Nach dem Ende der Prohibition beschließt Gangsterboss Remy Marco, seine illegale Brauerei nun als ehrenwertes
Unternehmen zu führen. Da ihm jedoch niemand sagt, dass sein Bier eigentlich scheußlich schmeckt, steht er vier
Jahre später vor dem finanziellen Ruin. Damit nicht genug des Unheils: nicht nur, dass sich seine Tochter mit
einem Polizisten verlobt hat, in seinem Landhaus findet er auch noch die Leichen von vier Gangstern, die kurz
zuvor einen Geldtransporter überfallen hatten.
Edward G. Robinson zieht als Marco sein legendäres Image als "kleiner Cäsar" genüsslich durch den Kakao und
kämpft mit Leichen, Gläubigern und heißen Bräuten.
