Ning Tsai-Shen, a humble tax collector, arrives in a small town to carry out his work. Unsurprisingly, no-one is willing to give him shelter for the night, so he ends up spending the night in the haunted Lan Ro temple. There, he meets Taoist Swordsman Yen Che-Hsia, who warns him to stay out of trouble, and the beautiful Nieh Hsiao-Tsing, with whom he falls in love. Unfortunately, Hsiao-Tsing is a ghost, bound for all eternity by a hideous tree spirit…

Ning (Leslie Cheung) est un inspecteur des impôts un peu timide, qui doit se rendre dans des campagnes reculées pour faire son travail. A Chinese Ghost Story III

Two Buddhist monks, the master Bai Yun and his inept disciple Shi Fang are transporting a golden idol of Buddha. On their travels they meet the relatively honorable mercenary Yin. Beset by thieves and ne'er-do-wells in the villages, the monks opt to spend the night at the local temple, which is none other than the Orchid Temple of the first film.

Fong et son maître s'arrêtent au temple Lan Jou pour passer la nuit. Ce temple est le repaire du démon Lao-lau qui se nourrit de l'énergie vitale des hommes. Alors que son maître part combattre les démons, Fong rencontre Lotus, un fantôme à la solde de Lao-lau.
