Les Arts Florissants, an ensemble specialized in performing Baroque music, is celebrating its 40th anniversary on the grounds of a 17th century building in Thire, in the French department of Vendee.
Saved from demolition at the last second, the "Building", a former 17th century home that was once a farm, is now the beating heart of the small village of Thire in Vendee. In 1985, its new owner, William Christie, a harpsichord musician and orchestra director, renovated the site and set about creating a French-style garden featuring box hedges, hornbeam trees, yews, and lindens.
Featuring a cloister, dovecot, and pond, the estate, which occupies nearly 4 hectares, is classified as a regional historical monument and is well loved by its visitors. It is the centre point for Les Arts Florissants, an orchestra founded in 1979 that has since become one of the most famous Baroque ensembles in the world.
Designed to foster creativity, promote interactions, and provide entertainment, this ensemble is named after an opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. It has played a leading role in shining light on a little known repertoire that is now traveling to the world's greatest stages. From 24-31 August 2019, this festival delighted fans of music, gardens, and artistic lifestyle.
Les Arts Florissants celebrated their 40th anniversary in the gardens of William Christie. The concert opens with music by the German George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and the Englishman Henry Purcell (1659-1695). Excerpts from the works of composer Henry Purcell represent the unique British operatic tradition, which incorporates dance and drama. This genius, who died young, had a truly distinctive musical language and is considered the greatest British composer before the 20th century. Christie's focus on French Baroque music is reflected in the second part of the concert with excerpts from operas, dance sequences, and vocal works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704), Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687), and Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764).
While Handel's and Purcell's music represents the bourgeois musical traditions developing in England, French Baroque music is entirely centered on Paris and the Palace of Versailles. Its most important forms were defined by the Italian Jean-Baptiste Lully, who thus became the most influential composer in French music history. Lully was the court conductor of Louis XIV, with whom he became friends. In addition to Lully's music, excerpts from "Les Arts florissants" by Lully's contemporary and rival Marc-Antoine Charpentier – the opera from which William Christie borrowed the name for his ensemble – are performed.
Les Arts Florissants Chorus and Orchestra with William Christie and Paul Agnew perform with the musicians from the Juilliard School of New York. The soloists are Rachel Redmond and Elodie Fonnard (sopranos) Anna Reinhold (mezzo-soprano), Cyril Auvity (tenor) and Lisandro Abadie (bass). In the Chorus: Solange Anorga, Maud Gnidzaz, Eugenie de Padirac, Virginie Thomas, Juliette Perret, Leila Zlassi, Alice Gregorio, Bruno Le Levreur, Yann Rolland, Marcio Soares Holanda, Jonathan Spicher.
