Beatriz Ferreyra was born in Cordoba, Argentina, and studied piano with Celia Bronstein in Buenos Aires. She continued her study of music with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, and Edgardo Canton, Earle Brown and Gyorgy Ligeti in Germany. In 1963 she took a position in the research department of french ORTF, working with the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) directed by Pierre Schaeffer. During this time she also lectured at the Conservatoire National Superierur de Musique de Paris. She worked with Bernard Baschet and his Structures Sonores in 1970, and served residencies in electronic music with Dartmouth College in 1976 and in 1998

The scores that Guillaume Lekeu devoted to the string quartet almost all date from the year 1887, when he was still self-taught as a composer. Rather
than an audacious desire to pit himself against a genre reputed to be the most difficult of all (he never subsequently returned to it), one should no doubt see in this above all a homage paid from his unconditional admiration for Beethoven, something he kept intact until the end of his short life.

In the expanding oeuvre of Miklós Sugár (*1952) features prevailing for decades can be found.
They include folk music reminiscences for—as the composer admitted in an interview—folk music represents a crystallized musical idiom for him. It functions as a kind of “skeleton”, a supporting pillar and, at the same time, appears as a souvereign musical world within which the traditional but by no means conservative harmonic world of instrumental folk music is of particular importance. On the other hand, the influence of repetitive music increased the emphasis on rhythm and the immense potential of electronics provided opportunities of sound impossible to realize by traditional instruments.

John Adams’ vast and varied output has earned him a wide audience, uncommon among contemporary classical composers. The works on this disc span his entire career to date, and illustrate his many different styles of writing for the piano.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Minimalist Jukebox festival – the first major exploration of this ground-breaking movement by an American orchestra - explores orchestral, chamber, and world music manifestations in the repertoire, from March 18 – April 2, 2006. Composer John Adams serves as the director of the festival.
