The project for this recording was conceived on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the birth of Alessandro Scarlatti; its aim is to exemplify the composer’s vast opera production through a selection of arias taken from his last six titles: three – Telemaco (1718), Marco Attilio Regolo (1719) and Griselda (1721) – originally commissioned for Rome, more specifically for the Teatro Capranica; three – Tigrane (1715), Carlo re d’Allemagna (1716) and Cambise (1719) – first staged in Naples, in the seasons of the Teatro San Bartolomeo. La virtù trionfante dell’Odio e dell’Amore (1716) would be added to these but only the libretto has come down to us. Finally we deliberately chose not to consider another opera written in the same period for Naples, Il trionfo dell’Onore (1718) since it is a comedy.

Drawing on the Chopin model of alternating major and minor keys, as well as on Russian folk melodies, Kabalevsky’s 24 Preludes (1943–4) find the composer’s writing at its most distinctive. They are coupled with the early 4 Preludes (1927), in which the influence of Prokofiev is seldom far away, and the Preludes and Fugues (1958–9), six widely contrasting and expressive preludes yoked to their traditional fugal partners. This is the second recording of Kabalevsky’s piano music by Alexandre Dossin, First Prize and Special Prize winner at the 2003 Martha Argerich International Piano Competition. The three Piano Sonatas can be heard on Naxos.

Zingarelli was born in Naples, where he studied (from the age of 7) at the Santa Maria di Loreto Conservatory under Fenaroli and Speranza. In 1789–1790 Zingarelli went to Paris to compose Antigone. He left France hurriedly at the time of the revolution and eventually returned to Italy. He was appointed maestro di cappella at Milan Cathedral in 1793, and remained there until 1794, when he took up the prestigious post of maestro di cappella at the Santa Casa, Loreto. In 1804, Zingarelli was appointed choir master of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. In 1811 he refused profusely, as an Italian patriot, to conduct a "Te Deum" for Napoleon's son, newly born and known as King of Rome, in St. Peter's, Rome and he was taken as a prisoner to Paris. However, Napoleon père was a fan of Zingarelli's music and so quickly released him. In addition, Zingarelli was awarded a state pension. In 1813, Zingarelli moved to Naples, where he became Director of the Conservatory. Among his notable pupils were Vincenzo Bellini, Michael Costa, Alessandro Curmi, Saverio Mercadante, and Luigi Felice Rossi. Then in 1816 he replaced Giovanni Paisiello as choir master of Naples cathedral, a position he held until his death in 1837. He died at Torre del Greco in 1837.
