    Shakespeare, Love and Service

    Shakespeare, Love and Service
    Cambridge University Press | Pages: 336 | 2008 | ISBN: 0521886392 | 2 MB | PDF

Peter Laslett's comment, in The World We Have Lost, that in the early modern period 'every relationship could be seen as a love-relationship' presents the governing idea of this book. In an analysis that includes Shakespeare's sonnets and a wide range of his plays from The Comedy of Errors to The Winter's Tale, David Schalkwyk looks at the ways in which the personal, affective relations of love are informed by the social, structural interactions of service. Showing that service is not a 'class' concept, but rather determined the fundamental conditions of identity across the whole society, the book explores the inter-penetration of structure and affect in relationships as varied as monarch and subject, aristocrat and personal servant, master and slave, husband and wife, and lover and beloved, in the light of differences of rank, gender and sexual identity.

    Phenomenology of the Human Person
    Cambridge University Press | Pages: 360 | 2008-05-19 | ISBN: 0521888913 | 6 MB | PDF

In this book, Robert Sokolowski argues that being a person means to be involved with truth. He shows that human reason is established by syntactic composition in language, pictures, and actions and that we understand things when they are presented to us through syntax. Sokolowski highlights the role of the spoken word in human reason and examines the bodily and neurological basis for human experience. Drawing on Husserl and Aristotle, as well as Aquinas and Henry James, Sokolowski here employs phenomenology in a highly original way in order to clarify what we are as human agents.

    Indians in Minnesota
    Univ Of Minnesota Press | Pages: 352 | 2007-01-18 | ISBN:0816627320 | 2 MB | PDF

In Minnesota, the legacy of the American Indian people is reflected in many ways. Twenty-seven of the state’s counties have names of Indian origin. The cities of Wabasha, Red Wing, and Shakopee are named for important Mdewakanton Dakota tribal leaders. With more than fifty-four thousand Indians currently living in Minnesota, their culture and values are well represented throughout the state. Characterized by a balanced perspective and a comprehensive approach, Indians in Minnesota provides a historical and contemporary account of Ojibwe and Dakota Indians living in both reservation and urban settings. Compiled from hundreds of enlightening interviews with tribal members, as well as data from the 2000 Minnesota Census and federal and state reports, the fifth edition of this well-known resource examines the significant changes and continuing needs of Indians in the twenty-first century. Exploring Indians’ relationships with federal, state, and local governments—including the expansion of gaming and growing tribal sovereignty—this book includes extensive coverage of the status of Indian culture, natural resources, economic development, employment, education, social services, health, housing, and criminal justice issues. The authors also focus on central concerns facing Indians today, including widespread efforts to preserve sovereignty, culture, language, and reservations, and to build brighter futures for Indian men, women, and children. The only resource of its kind, Indians in Minnesota offers statistics as well as insight into American Indian spiritual, cultural, and economic views to promote a better understanding of Indian communities and to create an invaluable tool for social change. Kathy Davis Graves is the author of several research reports for the League of Women Voters, including a groundbreaking study on violence prevention. Elizabeth Ebbott was the author of the fourth edition of Indians in Minnesota and contributed to the revision of the fifth edition prior to her death in 1998.

Reciprocity: An Economics of Social Relations (Federico Caffè Lectures)
    Cambridge University Press | Pages: 408 | 2008 | ISBN: 0521882656 | 2 MB | PDF

Reciprocity is a crucial part of our social and economic lives. In its various forms it permits the existence of a peaceful society in which people and individual rights are respected. Yet although the importance of reciprocity has been widely recognised in other social sciences it has, until recently, been somewhat ignored in economic modelling. Over the past three decades, economic theorist and moral philosopher, Serge-Christophe Kolm has been at the forefront of research into the economics of social relationships. In Reciprocity he provides a unique in-depth analysis of the motives, conducts and relationships of reciprocity. In doing so he shows that reciprocity and altruistic behaviour play an important role, not just in the micro-economy of the family but also in the macro-economy of the state. This book should be read by economists, sociologists and philosophers concerned with understanding the economic basis of social relationships.

    Indiana University Press | Pages: 328 | 2006-04-30 | ISBN: 0253345448 | 4 MB | PDF

In Quest of Indian Folktales publishes for the first time a collection of northern Indian folktales from the late 19th century. Reputedly the work of William Crooke, a well-known folklorist and British colonial official, the tales were actually collected, selected, and translated by a certain Pandit Ram Gharib Chaube. In 1996, Sadhana Naithani discovered this unpublished collection in the archive of the Folklore Society, London. Since then, she has uncovered the identity of the mysterious Chaube and the details of his collaboration with the famous folklorist. In an extensive four-chapter introduction, Naithani describes Chaube’s relationship to Crooke and the essential role he played in Crooke’s work, as both a native informant and a trained scholar. By unearthing the fragmented story of Chaube’s life, Naithani gives voice to a new identity of an Indian folklore scholar in colonial India. The publication of these tales and the discovery of Chaube’s role in their collection reveal the complexity of the colonial intellectual world and problematize our own views of folklore in a postcolonial world.

The Little Book of Yoga Breathing: Pranayama Made Easy
    Red Wheel/Weiser | Pages: 96 | 2004-01 | ISBN: 157863301X | 2 MB | PDF

This little book is an excellent guide for yoga breathing. You don't have to dig through long texts (although interesting as well) about eastern life philosophy and can get straight to work. Several breathing techniques are explained in a couple of pages each and categorized per purpose, e.g. concentration, energy etc. definitely recommendable, especially when you're `a starter' and just want to experience some techniques.

    Microeconomics of Banking, 2nd Edition

Over the last thirty years, a new paradigm in banking theory has overturned economists' traditional vision of the banking sector. The asymmetric information model, extremely powerful in many areas of economic theory, has proven useful in banking theory both for explaining the role of banks in the economy and for pointing out structural weaknesses in the banking sector that may justify government intervention. In the past, banking courses in most doctoral programs in economics, business, or finance focused either on management or monetary issues and their macroeconomic consequences; a microeconomic theory of banking did not exist because the Arrow-Debreu general equilibrium model of complete contingent markets (the standard reference at the time) was unable to explain the role of banks in the economy. This text provides students with a guide to the microeconomic theory of banking that has emerged since then, examining the main issues and offering the necessary tools for understanding how they have been modeled.

In my opinion, Nunn's Chess Openings is every bit as good as Modern Chess Openings-14, which I also own. NCO is denser and has more lines, but MCO-14 is slightly easier to use. Both books compliment each other. It is very interesting to note how each book often differs in their evaluations of identical lines. If you're an intermediate player or stronger, I recommend getting BOTH!
