    Jazz / World Fusion / Jewish music / 'Tzadik' stuff

    Imagine the Klezmatics in a small club, or maybe it's a living room, and it's just a subset of the great New York klezmer updaters, playing without a drummer, without a bassist, and without the great Alicia Svigals–keeping their core, trad-meets-modern sound solidly intact.

    A good showcase for early Masada

    One of my favorite albums of 2005. Ecstatic temple music!

    A good introduction to Zorn's easy-listening music…

    Jazz / Avant-Garde / Jewish theatre music / Kurt Weill-meets-Tom Waits

    London and Berger (and theatrical director Alexandra Aron) have created a highly original musical universe that's true to its hundred-year-old source, yet extremely accessible and entertaining to modern ears. Not to be missed!!!

    APE = 264 mb | MP3 @ 320 kbps= 144 mb

    The soundtrack for a movie about homosexuals in the orthodox Jewish community, "Trembling Before G-d" finds John Zorn's filmworks series meeting his Masada songbook halfway.

    APE & MP3 + CUE + LOG | TT 54:47 | Full artwork @ 300dpi
    APE = 374 mb | MP3 (lame –preset standard) = 87 mb
    Jazz / Jazz-Funk / Jazz-Rock / Fusion

    It may sound weird even today, but On the Corner is the most street record ever recorded by a jazz musician. And it still kicks.

    APE = 765 mb | MP3 (lame –preset standard) = 178 mb
    Jazz / Fusion / Jazz-Rock / Jazz-Funk

    This may be the most "commercial" sounding of all of Miles' electric records from the '70s, but it still sounds out there, alien, and futuristic in all the best ways, and Get Up with It is perhaps just coming into its own here in the 21st century.

    APE = 262 mb | MP3 (lame –preset standard) = 65 mb
    Jazz / Avant-Garde / Experimental Big Band

    While one can't quite call it the Sun Ra dance album, this 1978 recording, made for a tiny Philadelphia record label, finds the Sun Ra Arkestra's rhythm section settling into a steady groove on each of the lengthy tracks, while horns, reeds, guitars, and Sun Ra's keyboards solo in overlapping patterns on top.

    If accordion and trumpet isn't your thing, perhaps you better stay away. But if you're seeking a subtle yet rich tonal experience, this is it!

    This set might not be for everybody, but it certainly is for anyone who likes interesting forms of world music or all those puffed-up proponents of alternative country music. Why? Simple: It doesn't get any more alternative than Wolf Krakowski.

    Jazz / Hard Bop / Post-Bop / Progressive Jazz / Modern Creative

    Trumpeter Woody Shaw's second shot as leader was a bullseye. Blackstone Legacy, both the album and the song, takes the listener on a journey down a winding river of invention as sure to thrill avant-garde buffs as it is to baffle the uninitiated.

    Jazz / Blues / Yiddish music / World / 'Tzadik' stuff

    After Wolf Krakowski's last outing, the stunning Transmigrations: Gilgul, he and his band, the Lonesome Brothers, took country music to the extreme margins of integration, where it met blues and traditional Yiddish music in a swirl of loss, longing, and celebrations of holiday foods. This is gorgeous music any way you slice it, moving, deep, sensual, and full of a warm humor to boot.
