''For a time Schubert was in a melancholy mood and seemed to be rather ill. When I asked him what the matter was he simply replied, 'Well, you will soon hear and understand what it is all about.' One day he said to me, 'Come along to Schober's house today. I'm going to sing you a cycle of frightful songs.' (…) We were taken aback by its melancholy mood, and Schober said that he had only liked one of the songs, 'The Linden Tree'.''
Josef van Spaun, 'An Account of my Aquaintance with Franz Schubert'
"I like these songs more than all others, and you will come to like them too."
Schubert
"He [Schubert] let Lachner carry the first songs, under which 'der Lindenbaum', to the publisher Haslinger with the urgent prompt to in any case bring back a little cash in return, to pay for medication and soups. Lachner writes: "The publisher overlooked the situation and payed - one guilder for each song."All contain full booklets

for tenor & string quartet (arrangement Jens Josef) (2001)
Christian Elsner, tenor ▪ Henschel Quartet
The idea to set the piano part of Die Winterreise for string quartet came from the tenor Christian Elsner.
Seemingly new colors and sometimes even new sounds, which lay hidden in the original, suddenly come more
clearly into the forground and are shown in a different light.

Hans Zender - Schubert's Winterreise - A Composed Interpretation
Hans Peter Blochwitz, tenor ▪ Ensemble Modern ▪ Hans Zender, conductor (1995)
EAC | WAV (single tracks) | 2 CDs | TT 90:35 | 346 MB
Zender has orchestrated the piano part and 'modernized' the songs, in what he calls a creative transformation. Song structures
are broken, reformed, elements given new voices (Zender doesn't even shun the use of wind and rain machine). Sometimes this
approach can feel provocative, but in a song like 'Die Nebensonnen', where the parts are unhinged as in a terrifying schizophrenic
state of mind, the 'modern' view really adds to the drama. Peter Blochwitz and the ensemble modern perform it exemplary.
