Four of the six Suites from Nicola Matteis’s books of “ayres” in Héléne Schmitt’s collection contain movements by another composer. The Suite in C Major includes a brief but exuberant Gavotte for harpsichord from John Banister’s Melothesia; the (second) Suite in A Major includes a somewhat stately Gigg for harpsichord solo from the same source; the Suite in D Major, an improvisation by Jörg-Andreas Bötticher; and the Suite in G Major, a Prelude for solo violin by Henry Purcell. In reviewing The Arcadian Academy’s selection of these ayrs (Harmonia Mundi 907067, 15: 6), I cited Roger North’s remark that Matteis (an Italian transplanted to England), whom he considered worthy to be mentioned alongside Corelli, made a mouthful of every bow stroke. That said, I also noted that until the earlier recording, Matteis had slumbered “among the unknown and . . . unsung.” Those who warm to his lively Italianate style (Schmitt’s notes relate that he helped oust the French influence in English music) should also warmly welcome this further collection of his music.

Schmitt and the ensemble play the music with piquant sensitivity to the opportunities it affords for timbral nuance. The first two of the four books of Matteis’s collections may have been written with students in mind, but nothing in the six suites Schmitt has included sounds overtly didactic (though movements like the concluding Ciaccona from the Suite in C Major explore a variety of expressive techniques and bowings). The Suite in E Minor begins with a flowing Prelude that might remind listeners of the first movements of several of Corelli’s sonate da chiesa; the exploratory Passagio that follows burrows deeper into the rhapsodic expressive manner; and, after a very brief Giga, a Sarabanda con affetto further probes the sensitive style. The Sarabanda leads to a Prestissimo, after which an extended Ground brings the work to a conclusion. Both Franz Biber and the Germans (but also the Italian, Pandolfi-Mealli) displayed a fondness for such grounds, and I remarked in the earlier review that Matteis might have fallen under their spell.

The second movement of the second Suite in A Major, a Passagio rotto for solo violin, offers opportunities for the violinist to make not only a technical impression but an affective one as well. The Suite concludes with a titled character piece, “Scaramuccia prestissimo.” The Suite in D Minor opens with Jörg-Andreas Bötticher’s improvised Prelude, which features at its outset weeping descending lines. The air for solo guitar that succeeds it demonstrates the variety encompassed by these movements. The ensemble correspondingly varies its instrumentation, providing a kaleidoscopic burst of timbral color, such as those they display in the Gavotta from the Suite in G Major, played on solo guitar, in which Eric Bellocq and Bötticher demonstrate at the very least a virtuosic sense of tonal combinations.

Schmitt’s sound, though slightly acidulous, should never offend even the most ardent champion of modern instruments. She plays with a verve and dash that makes the ayrs ingratiating, even on first hearing. In the several movements in which this collection overlaps that of the Arcadian Academy (for example, the Minuetto con sua divisione from the Suite in A Major—the performers have often chosen different movements even when they perform the same suites, as in this case, so the overlap is minimal), the Academy’s slightly greater timbral opulence may make its performances marginally more attractive to some listeners; but collectors should find both performances highly appealing on account of their lively springiness. In all, this second volume should be welcome to specialists and to general collectors alike. Strongly recommended.
