Slipknot - The End, So Far (2022)

It's not too much to say that Slipknot's "The End, So Far" is the most anticipated metal album of the year. It is the seventh work of the band from Des Moines, Iowa, the six previous ones all reached the top 10 of the charts in Germany. For the direct predecessor "We Are Not Your Kind" it was enough for the top of the charts in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Finland in 2019. An impressive record for a rather extreme metal band.

With "The End, So Far", however, Slipknot can seemingly easily fulfill the correspondingly huge expectations and present an album that is as typical as it is varied. As the singles "The Chapeltown Rag", "The Dying Son" and "Yen" prove, there are plenty of stompers in the band's classic sound among the twelve new songs. However, the ambient-pop "Adderall" is perhaps the most experimental piece in the history of Slipknot right at the beginning of the album. A usual self-confident statement of the nine-piece from Iowa and another hint that the direction of the band could change more in the future than before.

After all, singer Corey Taylor never tired of emphasizing in interviews that the album title would not announce the end of the band, but only the end of a stage in the group's musical journey. "It's the end, so far, it just means that one era is ending and a new one is beginning. If you look at all of our favorite bands - Maiden, Metallica, Sabbath - each of those bands had different stages throughout their career […] and each era comes to its natural end and then the next one starts. That's the only thing the title of the album refers to."

Should Slipknot really change their sound drastically in the future, "The End, So Far" would at least be the optimal version of the band's work so far and a worthy conclusion of an era.
